WHY, dammit?

Augh! Bloody frightening 'My body is asleep but my brain is zooming around' phenomenon whose name I can never remember... Aha, Hypnagogic hallucination. I hate that. It always leaves me feeling all jittery and creeped out and I've had it happen three damn times this week! What the hell?

Sleep deprivation, irregular sleep schedules, and ( Read more... )

zomg, health

Hypnogogia is a sod. I nap at work, so conversations had around me get incorporated into my dreams, and the problem is that my brain extrapolates and then I don't know what I have and haven't heard. Also that thing where you wake up FIFTY TIMES or so before you actually and really wake up ...

... fascinating phenomenon, and has this weird crossover with night terrors in the form of the Hag and that sort of thing. I think I went to a talk on it once, but I didn't get to ask any questions because my mother was busy being Crazy Lady at the presentation person.

Seriously, though, I feel you.

Senses: THERE IS A LOUD BEEPING NOISE
Brain: SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE
Senses: I think you'll find it's the alarm clock
Brain: SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT I'M LATE
Senses: It's Saturday; my bad, that's your boyfriend getting a text.

Ack, I know that one well! "Aha, finally, I'm awake! Oh dear, I'm holding up my hand and it's invisible. Attempting to wake up again..." Freaks the heck out of me when they manage to capture that particular sensation in tv shows or films. (I'm lookin' at you, House.)

I'd never even heard of it until a few years back, so it's great to know that people are giving presentations about it. Now I want to know if there's a way to jolt yourself out of them somehow! I've already determined that attempting to flail and shout doesn't do anything helpful beyond making you twitch like a maniac. *snerk*

Sometimes the bastards are really subtle - it's only when I try to read something and can't, or the words are garbage, that I realise I'm actually still asleep. Ffffffffffuck, yeah.

Have you tried lucid dreaming?

Have you tried lucid dreaming?

I can manage that occasionally when I'm properly asleep, but can't quite get the hang of it during daytime snoozes. Maybe I should just try to stop falling asleep with my face in the middle of textbooks, eh? :-P

I'd say yes, but falling asleep on my face at my desk is a favourite passtime of mine and I'm not about to invalidate it

Quick! Quick! Blast some loud music and type madly before you can think about it too hard! (Just stay far away from the Benny Hill theme tune if you're writing a chase scene. It makes it really hard to take yourself seriously again. *g*)

Haha, I've put on my best Writing Music (the works of the sainted Sylvie Symbosis, one of Canada's finest products) and am attempting to slog, but my god this is such a disappointment to me.
