I got my friend to do a three mile ride up and down the river path to the Art Museum last month on my guest bike. She bought her own this Sunday (a friendly Jamis hybrid with an upright riding position) when I went to Pittsburgh and helped her pick it out. I'm pleased as pie.
I have a fender dilemma or a life dilemma or whatever. My road bike (Surly Pacer 42cm frame, lol) fits 700x28mm tires with fenders or 700x32mm without fenders. The tires right now are 700x25mm but I decided I hate them because they're stiff as fuck and unpleasant to ride on the Philadelphia city streets. I bought fenders that fit up to 700x28mm tires, so I thought I might get 700x28mm tires... but now I'm looking to buy 700x32mm tires because my awesome friends are looking to ride the Great Allegheny Passage and the C&O Towpath from PGH to DC. If I don't have career-related conflicts, I sooo want to hop on. The C&O Towpath is grassy and gravelly so I'd definitely need 700x32mm tires.
Do I get 700x28mm tires right now to make use of the fenders? Do I just go for the 32mm tires, buy a back rack and deal with muddy feet and sell the fenders on Craigslist? What do I do????
Also I think I want to see if I can swap my guest bike for a bike that's Larson-size. It's been nice having a backup bike but I'd love for him to be able to ride when he's here, because otherwise I'll be stuck on my two feet and the bus too when we go out. Hate it!
