so dis is why my middle name's muhammad (the most common name in the world). i get asked where i'm from so often! out of the blue, not because im traveling or somethin. if i had to guess i'd say once a month this happens, and so last year a jotted down whenever it did, and whadya know? at least a dozen times. my favorite part is the look i get when i reply "here" it's as if im stupid and then they go "no... where are your parents from?" same answer! i don't count instances where there's a general conversation going on about where people are from or times when i'm out of town. i included times when people from seattle tell me i have an accent and times when people don't ask and just start guessing haha
in 2011 i got asked where i'm from:
1. by dan's landlord
2. by a resident after i said the word "coupons"
3. a man sitting next to me on the bus "are you German? or French?"
4. the funder of the Neah Bay project "Rena I forget where you're from" (after her partner asked the only person of color in the group where she was from! BLAH!)
5. guy working at goodwill "are you from Puerto Rico? Cuba?"
6. by Shawn's cousin "you're a lil brown, got a lil Mexican in ya?"
7. another resident "are you Russian?"
8. random guy at the pay n park lot
9. by a friend of a friend "are your parents from Eastern Europe?"
10. same kid the very next day "are you Greek?"
11. by someone random "are you Peruvian?"
12. a gas station cashier started speaking to me in Spanish and was surprised when I couldn't reply (cashier was not Hispanic)
13. by someone making conversation at the bar
14. by my roommate!!! "I thought you were Persian"
15. weirdo at the T "oh I thought you were from Brazil or something"
it seems uncanny, if this is normal please correct me!
