"We'll leave a path of human flesh as a sign of a better way
Vengeance now
We'll leave a path of human flesh as a sign of a better way
For a better day"
After watching SawIII for the second time today, it has brought up some decent discussion (that I had with myself and a few co-workers). Since most of this analysis contains some kind of spoiler to the movie, I am making the entire text white. In other words, if you wish to read it, you must highlight it.
One of the first questions I was prompted was....If I had to rank all three Saw movies, what order would they be? I pondered for a bit and I said:
SawII
SawI
SawIII
SawII definately deserves any recognition as the best. The 'Saw' like twist started in the beginning of the movie, where Eric Mathews is confronted with Jigsaw(john) in the first 10 minutes. It then continued it's twists and turns throughout the movie and then in the end...by far..the best twist ever. Not only was the kid in the fucking safe the whole entire time, but Amanda was the accomplice. This totally opened up the door and the anticipation for SawIII.
SawI finishes in second because of the shock value. At it's debut, everyone thought this was just a run-of-the-mill serial killer movie. But, when Jigsaw stood up from the center of the room, everyone was electric.
SawIII even as the most recent, scores at the bottom. Even though its story line content was good, there were a few factors that I was disapointed in.
First, I was disapointed in the role of Amanda in the film. I had such an anticipation of her from the second film. I thought she was the biggest bad ass in the entire world and I couldn't wait to see her as Jigsaw. Though, in SawIII she was an emo bitch. Seriously, all she did was cry/whine about Jigsaw(john) dying. And then at the end when she was flipping out and then she shot the doctor?! wtf...I seriously thought she was better than that. Same goes for her not even listening to Jigsaw(john).
Secondly, the end twist. I guess I hated seeing this because I wanted the saw series to continue forever. But lets go through the chain of events. Amanda shoots doctor in the stomach. Husband shoots Amanda. Jigsaw says he was testing Amanda and she failed. Husband is like wtf is going on. Jigsaw says you can kill me, or forgive me and I'll save your wife. Husband is like lol die. Doctor's head explodes, Jigsaw dies revealing a tape. THERE IT IS. When I saw the tape, I seriously thought this was the killer twist. But no...It was just a lol you failed and I have your daughter and she is going to die.
This ending didnt really have any pop, no pizzaz, no flair. It just kinda sequenced the events and ended. No really, it ended the fucking movie forever. I mean, im sure the directors can cheeseball a SawIV if they really wanted, but cheeseball isn't their style. Now, I have been kind of criticizing the film but...there are alot of positives that make this film great.
The entire sequence of Jeff, the venegful husband, was well put together. If you notice in all three of the rooms, Jeff really does not have to save anyone. He just has to get the key and move on. Though when he is confronted with the final test (jigsaw), he still didnt learn anything when he killed jigsaw. But think, what did Jigsaw actually do to Jeff to cause this anger? Very little. Jigsaw put Jeff in a box and allowed Jeff to watch 3 people die. Jigsaw was even offering help for Jeff's wife. However, it seems that Jeff was just looking for someone to take his anger out. And when Jeff did, he lost everything.
Even though Amanda wasnt the bad-ass replacement Jigsaw that I thought she would be, her "bitch" role in the film is well played because it fit with the film's theme, which I believe is vengence. If you look at all of Amanda's victims (Both detectives and Troy) they were all murders. So even after the Doctor completed her "game" Amanda was ready to kill her. Just for the sake that, what I believe is, 'youre supposed to fail at jigsaw's game". I think that Amanda got jealous because she is supposed to be the only one who survived.
Though...I do have some questions that I am unsure about...
When Jigsaw(john) was blanking out during the procedure, it panned to a scene of John with a woman. Who is this woman?? It kinda looks like the female detective but more importantly, what purpose did this have? I mean, the only thing I saw was when Jigsaw grabbed the Doctor and started whispering "i love you", and Amanda got kinda pissy. I hope thats not the entire intention of the scene.
Why was Jeff allowed to advance through the rooms even though the victims died? It would seem more "jigsaw" like to have all the victims have to survive. I mean, isnt the point of Jigsaw's games to learn? What is Jeff learning if he just watches them die, and then moves on to the next room?
What was up with Amanda's cutting obsession? I cannot think of a tangible answer for this at all!!? wtf..
Even though none of us will know the answer, I really wonder what was in Amanda's envelope that she started to cry when she read.

Apparently there is a sawIV
http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/ap/20061029/116216028000.html"ince the low-budget "Saw" debuted with $18.3 million over the same weekend two years ago, Lionsgate has turned the franchise into an annual ritual with quickly produced sequels each Halloween.
The movies follow the diabolical schemes of psycho killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), who stages elaborate, bloody games to test the moral fiber of his victims. Lionsgate plans to have "Saw IV" in theaters over Halloween weekend next year.
"It's the biggest no-brainer of the century to put these movies out on Halloween weekend and wait for the money to roll in," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. "

The saw series doesnt really follow medical physics. Period. For example, when Troy ripped the chains from his Achilies tendon, he should have hit the floor instantly. This being said I think we can agree that just because we think somebody should be dead, does not always imply that they are dead. To be honost, I wont consider Jigsaw dead until his head is completely off and rats are eating it. So, a list of people that arent confirmed dead: Jigsaw, Amanda, Jeff, Dr. Gordon, Det. Mathewes, and Jeff's daughter.
Another small thing that I picked up is that after the surgery, Jigsaw is pouring wax ontop of a tape that says PLAY ME.

I noticed that after Jigsaw told amanda to get out of the room and she went to go look at the monitors (the first time when she went in with the gun) she grabbed some object and there was blood on the floor. I looked alot closer and saw that she was holding some kind of circular blade with a wooden handle. She was squeezing it tight enough to cut into her hand, hence the blood on the floor. Perhaps the answer to her cutting is whenever she feels rejected or even ashamed by jigsaw.
Final thoughts.
I think the movie was a good "closer" to the saw series. Even though I wished/prayed for the movie to go on. I hope some of you other enthusiasts will add to some of the things i said
