Ok so here goes, I guess I need to since I did last year, put out a top of list, so lets see
Movies:
1. Sin City- how could you go wrong with this movie, it just kicked major ass
2. Batman Begins- Kicked almost as much ass as Sin City...anyone who doubted Memento was a fluke can now officially bite me!
3. Cinderella Man- Better than Million Dollar Baby and Rusel Crowe has been cool since Gladiator
4. Saw II- Some people didn't like it as much, I still did. Still bloody with sick poetic justice and social commentary
5. History of Violence- Now that I think about it this movie has to make the list, just for the impact it had...powerful film
...ok so yeah they are all kinda "drama" movies, but thats what you get...40 year old Virgin and Wedding Crashers were also very good.
Albums:
1. Ghost Reveries- Opeth: Despite the fact that DT also had an album in 2005, Opeth actually outdid them and went above and beyond. The music is amazing as is the lyrics. Album continues to blow me away, no band makes a better comment on life showing the dark and light sides of life and humanity. 10/10 A classic album
2. Octavarium- Dream Theater: At first I was worried, but it grew on me. This was hands down Ruddess' album as he just proves how damn good he really is, which I almost have a problem with... strange since I think its ok for Petrucci and Portnoy to do the same. Anyway the 24 minute epic is the saving grace of this album, seems like every other track is awesome, the others just good and 1 track just sucks (Don't let James write DT music). Other than that a great album, but not nearly Ghost Reveries. 7.5/10
3(Tie). Touched by the Crimson King- Demons and Wizards: Took them damn long enough, even for a side project. Hansi and Jon serve up some good old fashioned thrash/power metal, good times to be had by all. Catchy tunes and classic riffs. I agree with an Amazon rater who said "More Demons, less Wizards" but heh its still damn good. 7/10
3(Tie). Dark Ages- Soulfly: Back to what made Sepultura so great. This album is angry and kicks major ass..and thrashes like its 1986 all over again. Combined with the signature tribal drumming this tops previous Soulfly albums in anger and intensity. Best pure metal album of the year, hands down. 7/10
5. Transgression- Fear Factory: Almost had another tie here, but James Labrie's album isn't this good. Fear Factory slows it down a bit on this one and gets real political which granted is strange for them, but none the less this is a very solid album destined to be one of my favorite from them. 6.5/10
Songs of the Year: "The Grand Conjuration"- Opeth, "Octavarium"- Dream Theater
