It's been a while. Life is going on as usual. Lots of school, lots of internship, and plenty of running.
I did a trail run last weekend, and I think it was the most amazing experience I've ever had. It's tagged as "the longest 5 miles of your life"...and it really was. By the end, I was soaking wet, coated in mud, and tired as all hell. And I was grinning from ear-to-ear. It was awesome!!! The trail was deep, thick mud over most parts. Some patches had ice over it. The hills were unlike anything I've ever seen. We went over a handful of them, and just when I thought I couldn't take anymore.....I looked up to see the next hill disappearing up into the fog. I don't know what it was, but I wouldn't call it a hill!! It was damn near a vertical climb. We were literally crawling/pulling ourselves up using trees, etc. We wound around trees, through places where there was barely a single-track path, over standing water, and slid down hills. All those uphill culminated in one steep downhill, which was solid mud...so basically it was "slide and pray". And then..the hills continued. Halfway in, it started pouring. So then my shoes were soaked through and every step went SQUISH as cold water splashed up and over my toes. Then we missed a trail marker and ended up getting semi-lost, until a guy behind us caught up and helped figure out how to get back to where we needed to be. At least the rain kind of cleaned my shoes. They had been solid mud....by the end you could kinda see some white parts on my shoes again. I had mud caked up to my knees, and could feel a pile of mud under my toes. Once in the car, we changed enough to be dry and somewhat clean, and I had to clean mud off my feet after I managed to peel my socks off. It was amazing. Just....amazing.
Half marathon training is going really well. The trail run ended up flaring up my plantar fasciitis issue, but I managed to baby it enough to get it to go away by Thursday, which meant I only missed 1 run (which I made up yesterday). I ran 8 miles today in 1:21:03, which is pretty awesome for me. I actually had to keep slowing myself down, because it was supposed to be a long slow distance run....if I hadn't, I probably would have blasted through much faster. And then I'd pay for it later. It would feel good to go faster, but it's not worth sacrificing the next week's worth of running. All this is just getting me even more pumped for May! I have to call and make my reservations, though!! Cincy, here I come.
I suppose there's more to update people on, but my attention span is gone now. So I'm off to hang with the boyfriend for a bit, then crash out for the night. Long day at Hawthorn tomorrow. Have a great week, guys!
