New York City - Post 1 (Wednesday - Friday minus GLEE)

Jun 23, 2011 14:27

I just got back yesterday from vacation and I was right back to work this morning.  Can I just say that I'm tired?

I'm tired.

New York was great though.  I rained the Friday we were there, but we decided to spend most of the morning in the hotel anyway, after going to the TODAY SHOW and failing to be able to see any part of Kenny Chesney.

But let's start from the beginning, shall we?

Wednesday, June 15th

Left around 8 in the morning, rolled into NYC around 3.  Would have been there slightly earlier, but we stopped to do silly things like eat and go to the bathroom.  Parked the car in the garage across the street and checked in (had to wait a few minutes, but that was fine).  Room was on the first floor.  (An approvement, we decided, from the year before when we were in the basement.  We're thinking next year we might get on the second floor.)  We picked up our theater tickets and just walked around.  A new hotel opened down the street from where we were staying and they also opened . . . THE SHAKE SHACK.  It's not the original one, but a second store.  (I think it's just a second store, the original is somewhere else in the city).  I love this place.  Lisa loved this place, too.  I think we ate there three times.  It's a great place.  You stand in line, place your order, and they give you this cute little pager thing.  Your page vibrates, your food is ready.  They have burgers, hot dogs, and fries.  AND SHAKES.  They have fantastic shakes and these things called concretes.  I think, maybe.  They're like blizzards or McFlurries.  Anyway, if you go to NYC, EAT THERE.

We went to Avenue Q the first night.  It's a great show and I highly recommend it.  I was a little surprised they were still allowed to use the Gary Coleman character, but I figure that's lawyer issue and not mine.  I'm definitely buying the soundtrack from iTunes when I have the time to, you  know, breathe and stuff.

Thursday, June 16th

Thursday we went to Hoboken.  What a pain in the ass.  We took the PATH train.  It was a quick, ohh, 14 minute ride, if I remember correctly.  We went to Hoboken to go to Carlo's Bakery.  You know, the bakery from CAKE BOSS on TLC?  That's the one.  It took us a few minutes to even get to the right street.  Hoboken is a pretty city.  Carlo's is right across the street from City Hall.  Or was in the court house.  Either way, it's a nice place to walk around.

We had to get in line to get into the bakery.  It's very small.  We only had to wait 45 minutes and thankfully the heat was under control.  It was very pleasant out.  I spent the time in line alternating between texting my best friend Kim, talking to Lisa, and talking to the people behind us.  I think they were from California.  They were nice.

Like I said, the bakery is uber small.  And despite the fact that you have to stand in line and wait, they still let way too many people in at a time.  You figure if you're going to stand in line and wait just to get in, that they wouldn't let so many people in as to where you can't see what they're selling.  I got a lobster tail.  It was the only thing that I actually got to look at.  Sure, I got some pictures of the dummy cakes on the wall and stuff (pics to come later) but I couldn't really see inside the cases.  And I get that the place is on TV and it's handmade and stuff but holy man, love a duck, it's pricey.  I should have taken a picture of the pastry.  It was lucky to survive the train trip back to NYC.  (This is mostly because the PATH train is really bumping.  Geesh).

So we decided we wouldn't get off the stop that we got on and disembarked from the WTC stop.  This was a mistake.  We had no idea exactly where we were at.  We ended up near Canal Street before deciding to hail a cab.  This is harder then is sounds.  First there wasn't a lot of cabs to hail at the point and secondly any cab we did find either had a passanger or was off duty.  The guy charged us $11 to basically get from the financial district to the theater district.  If you look at a street map of NYC and see how far that is to walk, it's not a bad price at all.

Thursday night we went to Glee.  This will get it's own post, completely with bad pictures, which should be up a little later tonight.

Friday, June 17th.

We got in the night before from the IZOD center pretty late.  Then we got up around 5:30, depite the rain and thunder, and walked down to Rockefeller center to see a free concert from Kenny Chesney at the Today Show.  We had to wait in line, not a big deal, but people kept pushing in each other like they were going to somehow get in their before the person they were behind.

And they we got into the little space you get to watch the concert from.  Who came up with this idea?  You can't see anything unless you're right up front.  The people beside us told us he was wearing a blue ball cap during his rehearsal, and I might have seen that, but I can't be sure.  I could hear him though.  But it was a sound check so he kept stopping.  We left before they started recording us for the show.

We went back to the hotel and actually went back to bed.  It was nice.  We got back up, changed, and went on a stage tour of Radio City Music Hall.  (Where we saw Glee perform at last year, he he).   It was interesting, the tour guide told us all kinds of fun facts about the place.
I have some pictures of that, too.  So, they'll be up . . . later.

That night we went to see Love, Loss, and what I Wore.  It's an off-broadway . . . er, reading.  They're still acting, there's just very little movement, which was nice.  Your not constantly looking around so you don't miss anything.  It was funny and sweet and just so . . . true.  I didn't realize that most of the actresses would be changing characters, but I caught on pretty quick.  Susan Sullivan (she places Martha or Castle) was on of the actresses and so was Emily Bergl (Men in Trees).

Then we went to Shack Shack after the show was done, grabbed some food, and went back to hotel.

So, that was Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  I'm going to get some work down and the post again soon.

Stay tuned!

(Alright, that's corny.  Whatever.)
