Eve

It didn’t take long for Sarah to sneak across the landing and tip toe down the stairs to the living room. Outside, the wind was alive with snowflakes and the soft glow of warmth from the fire in the hearth made the Christmas presents, all wrapped neatly beneath the tree, glow with the undiluted pleasure of childhood curiosity.
Upstairs, the adults; being both of her parents and her older sister Emily, slept soundly, as all grown-ups do on Christmas eve. But Sarah had not been able to get a wink of sleep since she was tucked into bed and her prayers said, for it was the most exciting night of the year, and she could not miss a minute of it.
She had strained her ears, to hear every noise, every clatter, and when her parents had at last retired, she pulled a book from her bookcase and hid beneath the covers with a torch, determined to catch Santa in the act of delivering his goods.
And now, she stared in wonder at the jolly man who stood at the kitchen bench, eagerly stuffing his lips with the chocolate chip cookies and glass of fresh milk left for his convenience.
He gave a little start, when he caught her eye, before a mischievous smile spread across his lips and reached all the way to his glossy cheeks and made his eyes twinkle with glee.
He patted his belly and nodded his head in pleasure, and Sarah knew that he had enjoyed the cookies she and her mother had baked, only that morning.
She was about to speak but Santa bought a finger to his lips and motioned her to be silent. He then pointed to the roof, and suddenly, a small jingle of bells sounded and the soft thud of hooves on a snow covered roof became apparent.
Sarah nearly squealed and clasped her hands over her mouth to mask her delight. She looked at Santa with anticipation and with a grace unknown to a man his size; he came towards her and held out a beautifully wrapped gift.
Hesitantly, she took it from his hands.

“Shall I open it now Santa?” she whispered softly, unable to remain silent any longer.

He winked.

With a feverous excitement, she untied the gold ribbon and then pulled away the red paper to reveal an exquisite baby doll. Her smile banished the shadows from the room and she hugged the baby to her chest, in unbridled joy and then kissed its forehead tenderly.
She lifted her head to look for the man who delivered such a precious gift, but he was nowhere to be seen.
Clambering up from her knees on the carpet, her doll tucked safely under her arm, she raced to the window, and looked out onto the winter’s night.
Just faintly, through the clouds above, she saw a line of brilliant white stars, moving slowly across the sky. She giggled softly to herself, bringing the baby once more to a loving embrace.

“Thank you…” she breathed sleepily, and fought her lids from closing.

She rested her head against the sill of the window and gazed across the landscape and before she knew it she was sound asleep, dreaming of tea parties, sunshine and a doll she would call Eve.
