What are the pros and cons of Gmail over, say, yahoo? I am wondering if I should transfer my email addresses from Yahoo to Gmail but it seems like a lot of work.
I got fed up with my yahoo account before I ever switched to gmail, but here's my two cents from my experience:
My gmail filters spam about 1000 times better than my yahoo account ever thought it could. My gmail never spam filters important e-mails from, say, my husband, while he's visiting Japan for two weeks (my yahoo did this routinely when he was using hotmail. Now that we both use gmail, this has never happened again.) Gmail's layout, to me, is simpler and less intrusive than yahoo, especially with its ads. Gmail has one line of text and a hyperlink at the top of the page, never color pictures, of flashy gifs. Gmail's structure of threading related e-mails took some adjusting, but now I'm used to it, and really enjoy it. I love the archive and search features, and the ability to never have to delete anything if I don't want to. I believe yahoo made itself a bit more like gmail in that aspect after I left, but I wouldn't know.
Gmail also keeps a sidebar of chat contacts open when I have it open, making quick questions for folks easy as I go about my day, and now they've added a video chat function that should be a more reliable way for my husband and I to video chat while he's traveling. Gmail chat has historically worked more consistently for us than other programs.
