Earthquake measuring 7.0 Richter scale rocked Indonesia's Java and nearby islands.
Epicenter was at 6.17 South, 107.66 East
Four minutes past midnight last night, an earthquake shook my area (See pic) The star on the sea is the epicenter, red arrow points to the city where I live, Jakarta, the country's capital. Woot! I've never felt an earthquake that powerful :D
The news is full with it, but no damage has been reported yet, only minors such as furniture falling off tables and shelves. The quake was felt as far as Denpasar, apparently. The point of origin was deep under the sea (reports say 286m below), so it was normal for it to be felt that far.
I was about to fall asleep when it hit my home. I didn't know what it was at first, it only felt like a rumbling in my chest. It's almost like being in a rock concert, with the loud music pounding through the air its way into your lungs. Then it felt harder...and harder...the feeling changed to how it feels when you withheld some truth from someone...That's when I decided to get out of my room. My suspicion was confirmed when my dad said he also felt it. 'Twas an earthquake.
A hanging lamp (can't really call that travesty a chandelier...), was swinging slowly, making our shadows sway. Very eerie :D We waited on whether or not we should evacuate, but the quake never got stronger. It only lasted a few seconds. Thirty...a minute tops. We waited for a few minutes before deciding to go back to bed. W00t! An earthquake! Yay! And I felt it :D
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to stand on Terra firma, and I do feel sorry for the people who lives on high rise apartment buildings (a news story tells the tale of one who lives in the 41st floor. Poor guy), but all this time, whenever there's an earthquake, I was never awake...or I was in my car where the vibrations can out...-vibrate any quake. And as I said, there are no structural damage, so hopefully no harm done. The most harm probably is a grim reminder to the devastating quake-induced tsunamis.
Strange how this earthquake happens to occur after the gubernatorial election day :D Election yesterday, earthquake today, I can't wait to see what's gonna happen tomorrow. Life's never boring in this city, I give ya that...:D
...except when waiting for something exciting to happen...
Cheers,
SQ
