Summary: Cain’s heart is lost once again.
Warnings: I’m pretty sure there’s angst.
Author's notes: This is dedicated to my cat, Blaze, who I found on the side of the road last night with blood on her face and her eyes popped out. I will not write a continuation of this, but if anyone wants to do that for me, or write a response, etcetera, feel free.
Cain grit his teeth as the Queen’s soft voice was eclipsed by the roaring of thunder, fat drops of rain splattering across the fair courtyard grounds. She was addressing a group of people in a clearing that he knew would be beautiful if the weather had been anything but this dreary storm. Cain himself watched her from a small alcove, away from the others, undisturbed.
The crowd gathered was sizable, but not half of them belong in Cain’s opinion. This was a pain that was private, but the Queen had to go and expose it to the realm. The realm, he thought, did understand why the heavens themselves were crying, but the people did not. Scanning the faces of the various people, Cain sought out DG and stared fixedly, knowing the moisture on her face wasn’t only from the rain.
As he’d hoped, the girl sensed his eyes and turned slightly in Raw’s arms, meeting his look with one of fire. Her chin rose almost imperceptibly as he tugged his hat and she nodded before returning her attention to her Mother, her posture fiercer than a moment before.
With one last glance at the coffin that stood before the Queen, Cain turned and left, heading for where his horse was waiting. Not a week after Zero’s release and he’d already done something more horrible than anything he contributed to while in the Witch’s service. He’d killed Glitch.
Cain’s first love, Adora, had suffered at his hands, but the Tin Man knew that this time Zero had done more than that - he’d plunged a dagger straight into the other man’s heart. Now Glitch was being honored with a grand funeral as a hero by people that didn't even know him. Cain knew that Glitch was a hero and he deserved to be recognized as such, but these people... they didn't know him, they weren't the ones that fought with him, argued with him.
Loved him.
Cain had given Zero a chance, but he'd used it to extinguish the passion that was Glitch, managed to wipe out the rhythm of a heart that never stopped caring and destroy a soul that was purer than snow.
Cain had lived hard, he would never forget. He would not forgive. It was time for his revenge.
