Queer as Folk - Brian, Melanie, Ted, Emmett and Daphne

I have scored a cheap used set of QAF dvds that appear to be working properly thus far. As I've only seen 2 discs, I hope I'm not being prematurely triumphant.

I know I'm years behind the times, but I have to say this show is brilliant. Many of you are already well aware of that. But here are my impressions of a few characters thus far. Some spoilers if you haven't seen the series already.

Brian Kinney - Yes. He's a jerk. An immature jerk. But I have to love how he's out there with what he thinks and how he feels. Despite all that, it's amazing the way people trust him. Ted with his living will, Lindsey with her insistence on his being a father to Gus, and Michael with his puppy-dog devotion. Justin's trust doesn't really count as yet (to me, after watching 6 eps) because Brian is his first lover. Of course he's in love and has yet to see Brian's flaws.

Melanie - I'm trying very hard to like this woman or at least find something good about her. Sure, she loves Lindsey and the baby, but why does she see Brian as this huge threat? The way she screeches at him for even inconsequential things turns her into a caricature. I can see her upset at the bris, but I cannot see why she was so annoyed at him when Gus was born. Is she really that jealous? It seems to me she would have preferred him not being there. And then she blabs to David about Michael and Brian before she even realizes who David is seeing. Graceless, that.

Emmett - My favorite character thus far. Flamboyant, kind, sweet, intelligent and funny. He's got amazing dress sense, too. When his eyes well up, I want to wrap him in an afghan and watch Barbra Streisand movies with him. And I don't even care for her films.

Ted - The jury's still out on whether I feel sorry for him or if I should slap him upside the head. Note to Ted: If you going around talking about how big a loser you are, then everyone will agree with you. And I really don't think you should mess around on cumquick.com while you're at work.

Daphne - She's a cool kid. Justin's character needs someone his own age with whom to interact and she fits the bill. I'm glad casting didn't choose someone so gorgeous as to be distracting or, conversely, a girl who is herself a social outcast. The latter would have begged exploration and would have been a distraction. I like this kid.

This is so much better than watching youtube vids of partial episodes. I thank the folks who posted those, but I found it frustrating not to be able to figure out what was going on with anyone other than Justin and Brian. Now I know why Ted was in the hospital and how the word "faggot" got painted on Brian's jeep.
