I have to agree completely, and I don't even like cats that much (read: at all, with the odd exception). One of the farm cats we had when I was little would cleverly position herself outside the living room (they were all outdoors/garage/barn cats), pressed up against the sliding doors where there was a heated panel on the inside early in the morning, when it was still freezing cold, and then pretend to be fast asleep as the other 11 cats tried to shift her for the rest of the day to get the warmest spot. Which also happened to be the one spot nobody would trip over them when exiting the house. If a human walked by with a treat, she'd suddenly be wide awake and ready for noms, but she still wouldn't shift an inch. She did that for at least seven years, probably longer (cat was born way before I was).
I still think cats on the whole are pretty silly animals, but they definitely do stuff on purpose. If they dislike something, say, a neighbour's car, they will piss all over that particular car even if they never as much as sniff any other cars. That neighbour started driving his wife's car when going up the mountains by our house.
She was definitely a clever puss : ) No pesky mice about the place when we had all the cats.
I'm sure my view is coloured by having grown up on a farm, but I think one of the reasons I don't like cats is that I don't like indoors cats with their rubbing against you and generally being in the way rather than being busy catching mice or whatnot and leaving you alone. And most people who have cats have them as indoors pets, some of which come and leave as they please (these cats tend to annoy me less for some reason).

Outdoor cats learn to adapt in amazing ways. I love how they pile on top of each other to keep warm.
