Have to get past it, I guess

I find U.S. politics very discouraging. The vast majority of us are nothing but pawns, moved around a chessboard at the whim of the people we've been stupid enough to elect. I keep thinking we need other people in office, but something tells me who we elect doesn't matter. Sooner or later, all elected officials find themselves playing the game, whether joyfully or unwillingly, while the rest of us sit on the sidelines and watch.

I'm trying to fight this nauseating sense of hopelessness, but it's difficult. It doesn't matter how many phone calls I make or emails I send. Nobody's listening in Washington because they have their own careers to consider, which to them are far more important than the distant people they represent.

I try hard to keep in mind the four Republican N.Y. senators who helped pass the gay marriage law despite the very real threat to their careers. These people stood up for what was right, not what was politically expedient. As I watched them present their views on the Senate floor, I was so proud of them and the work they were doing. I wish our U.S. reps and senators had half as much wisdom, vision and courage. If they did, our nation wouldn't be in the mess it's in.

This guy is a keeper, New York. A person who actually studies the issues instead of reacts to them is a person worth electing, no matter his party affiliation.
