Just a few things

I'm listening to "O, Jerusalem," a Holmes pastiche written by Laurie King. She's written a bunch of these pastiches, and they're generally well-received.

However, I have been thinking a great deal about a review from Amazon.com that asks why a writer would want to build a career on one of the most famous characters ever created - one she herself did not create. King is careful to say on her website that her stories aren't Holmes stories, but Mary Russell stories. I don't actually buy that because without Holmes, I doubt these books would be that popular.

Then again, many people built or added to their careers by portraying Holmes in movies and television. How is that different from writing stories based on Holmes (or any other character that's in the public domain)?

We fanfic writers don't profit the way these people do, and we're very careful to include disclaimers when we do post stories. Quite frankly, ladies and gents, I think a lot of you could be profiting from your stuff, especially the slash.

Something to think about.
