Esther 5:3
"Then the King asked, 'What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be given to you.'"
As some of you know, the kids and I are doing a secular study of the bible. I gave the kids random books, verses and chapters to look up so that they could become familiar with how to find what they needed.
I told my daughter to find Esther 5:3 and read it. I had no idea what it would contain. But it contained a verse that Bertie uses!
It was a stellar example of what I've been telling them all along - that many works of literature contain bible references. If you've never heard of these verses then you might miss subtle nuances in any number of stories. Recognizing bible verses in other works of fiction adds a lovely dimension to your understanding of the works.
Of course, I had to explain about Bertie and his Scripture Knowledge Prize. My son wondered why he keeps referring to something he won so long ago. I said it was because Bertie didn't have any other academic victories.
