2d. Sam realizes that the good Samaritans that called in the accident aren't quite right.
Sam somehow managed to get Dean breathing again. His pulse was weak, but his heart had started beating again. Sam glanced around the area, willing the damn ambulances to arrive, and noticed flashing lights in the distance.
Sam ran his hand over Dean’s chest and said, “Dad, I’m gonna head down the road and flag down the ambulances.”
“No, I want you to stay right here.”
“Dean’s not gonna make it much longer without help,” Sam stated. He didn’t wait for his father’s response - nothing he could say would change Sam’s mind - and Sam broke into a run.
He stopped abruptly when he noticed that the supposed good Samaritans who had called in the accident didn’t look disturbed by the situation. In fact, they seemed to be enjoying it. The man and woman watched the smoke rise from the hood of the Impala with almost glee.
“Get a grip. They called for help. You’re just seeing evil everywhere,” he told himself, attempting to ignore the warning signs going off in his head.
As though they knew he was staring, two sets of cold, yellow eyes set their gaze on him. Sam shuddered and suddenly regretted his decision to leave his family unprotected in the car. God, what the hell was he thinking?
The young man walked toward him, and Sam cursed himself for leaving the Colt with his father. The only protection on him was his cellphone. The man stopped walking when he was about a hundred feet away and hollered out, “Enjoying the show, Sammy?”
“Stay away from them.”
“Is that any way to thank me for calling 911?”
“You’re not going to touch my family.”
“I don’t have to do anything. I can sit back and watch your brother bleed to death.”
Sam pounded his fist into his leg and the man went on, “It sounds like the ambulances are a bit confused about where you are. They might head off in a different direction and poor Deanie-boy wouldn’t make it. You might want to go after them, Sam.”
Sam’s eyes darted in the direction of the flashing lights. The demon was right. Sam knew he had to run after the ambulance. Dean didn’t stand a chance if he didn’t get help, and Sam didn’t stand a chance of holding it together if he lost his brother.
But he couldn’t run off when neither his father nor Dean could protect themselves. What was to keep the demon from rushing over to the Impala and finishing off the job he started?
“I can see that you’re torn, Sam. My suggestion? Let them die now. Hell, they’re practically gone already.”
“I’m going to kill you,” Sam stated.
“You’re going to join me, Sam. I’m going to kill them.”
“I won’t let you.”
“Sammy, kiddo, we’ve proven tonight that your powers are useless against me. And you’re not going to know when or where I’m coming after them.”
Sam picked up his phone and ran back toward the Impala. He wasn’t going to let that damn thing win. When the operator at 911 asked for his emergency, Sam helped to direct the paramedics to the location without leaving his family unprotected. He ignored his father’s glares when he grabbed the Colt from his hands and pointed it at the couple.
When he saw the ambulances coming down the road, Sam took the Colt and hid it at the edge of the woods. He made sure that it was protected, using symbols he had found in one of Bobby’s books. When he stumbled back toward the car, they were loading Dean’s gurney up on an ambulance and breathing air into his lungs. Sam rushed over, but was pulled back by a police officer who had arrived on the scene.
Sam clutched his head and the officer immediately called for another medic. A pretty brunette appeared with a reassuring smile. She sat Sam down and asked him what the date was and who was president. Sam sighed and said, “My brother…I want to be with my brother…”
The woman said, “You can ride over with him if you want, but the doctors aren’t going to let you go in with him.”
“I don’t…he needs me right now.”
“And is the other man your father?” she asked. Off Sam’s nod, she said, “It’s going to take them some time to get your father out of the car. It collapsed in on his legs and they have to cut him out.”
“Is he going to be okay?”
“As far as we can tell at the moment, but we won’t know for sure ‘til we get to the hospital. In the meantime, I think we should get you looked at too.”
“I’m fine.”
“It’s going to be awhile before anyone will have news on your brother or your father. You might as well get that nasty cut on your head looked at.”
Sam sighed and finally relented. “Fine.”
