They found, after the war had ended, that peace was fragile and dissidents many. Toph knew her duty as well as he knew his, and neither of them could avoid the call to arms against the rebels. She left traces of dirt caked onto his skin, smudges of dust where her fingers had touched his arm, and the taste of mud in his mouth when she left him behind.

“Mechanic, London, Earth-That-Was,” she whispers in his ear before she kisses his cheek and slides her kisses down to his lips. He’s been left behind, (blue, blue box, back and forth, time is an open road) and she feels herself pulled towards him, fascinated, “like magnets,” she tells him. When the blue box returns, (for time is an open road and we are a pit stop) she smiles and kisses him again, “like gravity,” before she leaves Serenity.

He speaks nonsense and tells her that timelines aren’t meant to be twisted, broken, molded into how they should be. She ignores him; his words remind her of Nick and that is something she’d rather not think about now, not when there are prehistoric worlds to be explored. Instead, she leaves the blue box behind - the anomalies are calling and she won’t be restrained by the rules of cowards.

He'd sought her out, mumbling about time as he introduced himself and convinced her, charmed her, into accepting his offer. Sanity was relative (metal spheres in the sky, the Toclafane, cold metal in her hand, watching as he died) and she recognized the insanity in his eyes, the same madness that reflected in her eyes every time she looked in the mirror (she didn't do that as often now). It was only afterwards that she recognized his name as that of a dead man's.

Any, any, silver lining (Theme: Three Sentences) at
comment_fic . Set in the Pavor Nocturnus timeline with a mention of canon character death.
Kate watches the monitor as the footage of the bomb destroying Buenos Aires is relayed. She wonders if Magnus made it out, if anyone could possibly have made it out in time, if this will be considered a tragedy for the loss of lives or a victory against the palefaces. The cloud from the bomb covers the ruins, and she questions whether this cloud could possibly have a silver lining.

comment_fic . Set in the Pavor Nocturnus timeline.
Kate reads the casualty reports of cities that have been lost, hears about another ship of refugees that never arrived, and knows the end is near. Will protests, clings to his useless optimism and claims that the situation will get better. She knows it won’t but she nods her head and agrees anyways, and tells herself the lie is worth it.

She hears the satisfying slap of the water balloon hitting the wall and breaking into bright orange pieces, feels the splash of the water on her cheeks. She can't forget the way the police building had exploded, or the way home is so different now that her dad is gone and never to return (he'd promised he'd come home, he'd promised, he said he would on the phone). She steals the water balloon from the hands of the kid next to her and holds it, wet and cold and slimy in her hands, before she throws it hard against the wall.
