Parker was kicking herself hard - mentally at least. She had put back the Hope Diamond only minutes after she had stolen it. She was still stewing about it - being on that rooftop and being able to walk away with the Hope Diamond - and she put it back! “Ugh,” she said to herself as she rounded a corner. “This is Nate’s fault,” she added on in her talk to herself. “He changed me and then we just left and - it’s all his fault,” she continued but it fell into muttering.
“Whose fault?” A familiar voice asked her.
Parker turned and saw Hardison. She just stood there for a moment before going over to him. “You found me.”
“You didn’t make it easy,” he replied with a smile. “So, who are you mad at?”
“Nate - it is a long - “ she stopped herself, just looking at him. “How did you find me? We had our own charter jets, nobody could see the tickets and - there was no way. How?”
“You got a spam message to your email about a Nigerian wanting money to buy a plane,” he said. “You clicked on it to skim it in Yahoo mail and that made it easy to track you.”
“Our first job,” she said with a smile. “Why are you in DC?”
“For you,” he replied. “Because I missed you and wanted to see you and there was no other way to find you. I didn’t like the fact that I couldn’t just turn around and talk to you. Or go down the hall and knock on your office to talk about some little thing. I need you Parker - kind of like the sky needs a rainbow after a sun shower.”
She tilted his head at him. “What?”
He turned and made a face at the bush before turning back to Parker. “I just need you. For everything.”
She wasn’t sure to what to say to that, so her mind went to a safe question to ask. “You want to go get coffee?” she asked as she offered him a hand.
“Yeah,” he replied as he took her hand. “Thanks.”
“No problem,” she said as they walked together. “Besides, it’s a beautiful night. I like the way that the moon hangs in the sky. Since it’s full, it was easier to see.”
“If you could live anywhere, where would you go?” he asked, mostly a throw away question to get her mind off of the job she just did.
“Ah - I answered you on this before. My answer is still the same. I don’t think I can live in any one place. I like hopping from city to city with an idea of something to steal. Besides, that’s the way I am. What about you?” She asked. “Your answer still the same?”
“Yeah,” he replied. “Give me a Wi-Fi connection and I’m happy. Nothing too rural but yet nothing too big.”
She nodded a yes. “Is someone following us?”
“What?” He asked and looked around.
“Don’t be so obvious,” she said quietly to him as she moved only her eyes. “It feels that way.”
“Nobody is following us,” he said and smiled. “The coffee shop is coming up. Let’s slip in there and get something to drink.”
“Okay,” she replied, looking around one more time. She followed him into the coffee place, feeling safer inside the building than outside in the open. It also gave her time to think on that odd thing he said about the rainbow. She wasn’t sure if she really liked it or not, but it seemed like something he would say. Maybe if he was told about it first. “Where did you hear about the rainbow thing?” She asked after he paid for coffee and she found them a table.
“I think it was something Nate said to Sophie to calm her down after one of their fights,” he replied with a shrug. “I just thought that you would like me saying it to you.”
“I don’t know yet if I did or not,” she replied truthfully. She was surprised that he was always able to get the truth or pretty close to the truth out of her. “I do miss our dysfunctional family.”
“I do too but I don’t think there’s any good chance of us getting everyone back together,” he replied. “If you think you’re hard to find, imagine how hard it is to find Eliot.”
“Don’t we just go towards where the nearest war is?” She asks. “Or maybe figure out which side hired him? Maybe someone boasting on the internet? I remember you telling me about that. Plus, maybe he signed onto his WoW account. I stopped playing, but only because - well, I liked playing in the group. And no group was good enough.”
He smiled at that. “We are a good group together. It’ll be easy to find Sophie and Nate - those two actually use the grid more than they think they do.”
“Kind of like trying to find you?” She asked.
“Harder for me - I cover my tracks. Those two don’t,” he said as he pulled a laptop out of his backpack. He powered it up and took a sip of his coffee as he waited. “What else have you been up to?”
“Nothing really - I’ve been living off of the money from our jobs. It doesn’t feel right to just go in and do a job right now. I blame Nate for that. I can’t believe I put the fraking Hope Diamond back.”
“Wait - you put it back?” He asked, just looking at her.
“Yep. It didn’t feel right to take it, so I put it back. This is all Nate’s fault,” she replied. She peered over at his computer screen, her curiosity coming out. “Have you found anything yet?”
“Haven’t started looking yet,” he said with a smile as he started to type things on the keyboard. She didn’t fully understand what he was doing, so she sat back and waited. It only took twenty minutes before he grinned from ear to ear. “Found him.”
“Where?”
“Well, he was in Istanbul for a while, before moving onto Turkey and then a bit in Greece. He’s making his way back through Europe it seems. Right now, he’s in England,” he explained.
“What’s he doing in England?” She asked as she moved to look over his shoulder, getting closer to him.
“Helping out the Irish mob,” he replied. “Too bad it isn’t still the 90s - it would make more sense for him to be helping the IRA, but then he would be in Ireland. But with the breakup, the remaining bits went into the mobs, including the ones in England. He’s working with the Noonan family though. They’re in Manchester.”
“I’ve never been to that part of England,” she said. “How’s your accent?”
“Smashing,” he said with a grin. “Yours?”
“Bloody well,” she replied with the same grin. “Shall we go get our Eliot?”
“Yes, we shall,” he replied as he turned off his computer, putting it away. He then stood, put his backpack on and offered her a hand. She took it and stood, moving to take his arm instead. He just grinned at that, leading her out and towards a taxi to go to the airport. The full moon was giving him some luck as she stayed close to him for the entire trip. He wasn’t about to complain at all, hoping that their relationship was taking a turn for being a couple than just pushing them farther apart.
