liking pop. =/= missing brain cells

Instead of going off on a tangent at the places that sparked this rant, I'll do it here. Yet another "liking Naruto makes you an idiot" post, coupled with a whole bunch of "only idiots like HP" comments on slashdot.

So, liking HP/Naruto/Bleach/Avatar (those seem to be the usual suspects) does not make a person a moron; on the contrary it shows they ( Read more... )

I totally agree with what you said. I was trying to get my brother into Bleach and my brother said, "It's too mainstream" but I said, "If it
s mainstream, doesn't that mean it's good enough for the majority to enough". Although you're right with some exceptions depending on the person, I totally detest books like The Awakening and Madame Bovary even if they're classics and everyone loves them.

I never heard ATLA get any bashing though since everyone I know LOVES that show intensely even mothers and college advisors(although even your in fandom you'll notice people that criticize every minute detail, it's annoying but everyone is entitled to their own opinion). Besides even though it's Target audience is 6-11 years old, due to longer story arcs/intense plots/well-defined characters it target's more of a family audience and that is happening to a lot of shows lately due to the popularity around all age groups.

I hate it when authors talk about other authors badly, I can't believe O.S. Card said that just like when J.K. Rowling said something like "At least I'm not like C.S. Lewis and use Theology in my books" although I guess I could forgive her because her books are often being compared to C.S. Lewis' books but I can't even see why, they're hardly alike.

Sometimes it's better to stay away from hardcore fandom although it's very tempting to look away.

And oh, nice to see a fellow Lurker! I used to go on the IRC channel a lot when it didn't become so popular (They are like 1500 people on it now, I remember 800 or something). And what's worst is the pop-up ads on the website now, there weren't any years ago.
