JK's update on spells
I'm actually doing a little dance cause my theory wasn't completely trashed by her new update. I was wrong about spells, as she uses them as a generic term, but basically right that charms don't change things. I think that's what I was basically getting at, but using a lot more pseudo-science. I was sort of right about what she refers to in canon as spells most of the time, those being spells that change objects. I love her definitions for being very clear and to the point. I didn't think she'd ever post on this, so I'm thrilled.
Now I have more of a feel for how fic authors feel when JK updates. "Will it/won't it be trashed?" Yeah, I feel some of that regarding my essays, but so much of it is very character based and non-speculative, so chance of getting contradicted gets hard. I occasionally talk about possibilities, but even those are usually firmly qualified with maybes. Seeing a very direct statement from the author is just cool. That theory came about 'cause I was peeved about authors using the two words interchangeably, so author confirmation that they're only interchangeable in one direction (a charm is a spell) is just awesome. Yeah, I wasn't 100% correct, but I also wasn't completely wrong. So I figure I got the better end of the deal, cause I can't ever be totally correct cause I can't read JK's mind.
So, I want to know about the JK updates that affected/touched on/dealt with something that you've written about. Did it contradict your writing? Support it? A little bit of both? How did you feel? etc.
Though now I may need a new possible presentation for Prophecy. I was thinking of submitting a proposal on magic, how it works, how it can be used to teach classification and integration of sciences. Could still do something with it, maybe. Or I can just submit a proposal to do a panel/presentation/etc. on Peter or Percy or something. I'd ask for a Draco panel, but I'm sure the planners already have zillions of proposals for that. Would anyone be interested in doing a panel/presentation with me on something?
