Draco's fun to play with. I'm with you that side characters and OC's are probably a better bet, but hey, jaded cynical trio that's faced a real war, had their beliefs shattered? You could pull off a ship where no one believes in anything anymore, and both people are struggling to find themselves and something to fight for/believe in. But it's hard and messy and a trick to pull off without becoming melodramatic and/or pretentious.
That's an interesting point about Andromeda/Tonks and Sirius and Regulas. All are characters that can really be played with, and in ways that don't even involve shipping. People are very malleable, but the shifts tend to be gradual, or at the least, rooted in something.
Regulas is interesting cause he may have thought that he really believed in Voldy, that he was a DE at heart. Faced with the actual tasks though, he could have realized that he joined the cause to make his parents proud, to not be Sirius, etc. So he's not that easy to pair with anyone, cause he could have ascribed to his parents beliefs before really having to act on those beliefs. (Yes there's a Draco parallel here, there probably is supposed to be one, judging by the fact that HBP is where we've got both turns.)
