The Full Moon Lodge: A Forgotten Retreat for Women

May 08, 2009 00:29

Imagine a gathering of women during the Full Moon, in an intentionally created sacred space, to honor each other, the Goddess and the phases of the moon. Imagine those women, ranging in age from youthful adult to wise sage, sharing the accumulated wisdom gained during the three phases of life for women: Maiden; Mother; Crone. Imagine women peacefully supporting each other in becoming their biggest best possible selves and sharing in divination rituals for manifestation, healing, strength, health, community and survival while honoring the sacred feminine. This is the experience of a Full Moon Lodge retreat.
Women who live together or work together will unconsciously begin to regulate their menses together, eventually menstruating on the same cycle. This natural synchronistic rhythm is one of the sacred bonds of sisterhood.
Not long ago, it was expected that women would retreat during their time of menstruation. This typically occurred at the time of the full moon, hence the modern name for women's menses “moontime.” In a lodge-like setting, the group of women would communally bleed while discussing the affairs of their tribe or community. They would counsel each other while practicing new methods of healing and discussing their dreams, and their connection to the Earth and the Universe. On the seventh day, when the women’s moontimes had waned, they would return to their tribe or community to tell the men and the boys of their experiences and prophetic visions. Women were relied upon to guide their communities in this sacred and respected way.http://www.witchvox.com/va/dt_va.html?a=usoh&c=words&id=12975
