A rolling stone

Mar 03, 2006 18:24

Write about an overheard remark or secret that you were not supposed to have heard.

I'd just gone into Weegee's, the restaurant round the corner a bit from the Key Club for a meal when I overheard the men at the next table give Katie a hard time. They didn't exactly keep their conversation quiet after that either.

'Did y' get through to the Yank?'
'Tomorrow afternoon.'
'And we 'it 'im at the Key Club?'
'That's where he 'angs, Finney, in the afternoon.'
'Is it hurt him? Or kill im.'
'Hurt. They need his signature.'

It's what started it all. When I told Finney what happened, what I'd heard, he questioned whether I was setting him up. I wasn't. I didn't even know who the bloke was he showed me on the front page of the paper. That changed though, as he knew of me eventually, it seems, and thanks to his men things changed.

Everything.

I'm glad I overheard it, and managed t' help Finney. Just kind of wish what came after that hadn't happened. But like they say, rolling stone and all. Once this rolling stone started, it didn't stop and there ain't be no moss gathered.

A few receipts, but no moss.
