(Meta) In Chronological Order...

Most of my 'Buffy' fic is post-TV series. Some of it is pre-series (and some of that is way, WAY pre-series); and a very small amount is during-series. So, inspired by angeariawondering whether to catalogue her fic into chronological order, I decided as an exercise to see if I could put all of mine into sequence. The challenging part, of course, is that ( Read more... )

(You know... if you added links to the story titles, it'd be an incredibly useful fic list...

...I'm just saying.)

It would also have taken about four times longer to put together - and it already took several hours - which is why I briefly considered the option, then decided to add the last line about my fic index instead. Sorry. :-(

I imagine it did take a long time to order it all.

I started with the cut-and-paste text from my fic index - which I had to update anyway - edited it down, then started pasting things under the right headings. Then puzzled over the ones which didn't quite fit together.

It was interesting to see how it all took shape, and how most of it is coherent even though I didn't write it to form a single continuity. (Though more recently I have started adding in little snippets into fics to link them to others I've written, like the ending of 'What Can Change The Nature Of A Man?' having a line through in to foreshadow the Willow/Saga Vasuki/Kennedy fics I wrote earlier.)

If I'd left out the drabbles, I think there'd have been far fewer fics taking place during the series.

For the most part, I try adhering to canon when I write stories - Kinda slip-into-the cracks fic - so I doubt it'd be hard for me to organize it. But it starts to get weird post-series. I'd probably take "Thought You Should Know" as my canon. And it's so interesting for me to realize that I made it go AU from Season 8 right before "Safe" - and that I brought Giles and Faith back into the story without ever mentioning Germany. Is my bias showing? :D

But making TYSK my fic canon, means that all these other Buffy/Spike reunions I've written post-series are all AUs. Though my other Season 8 fic still fits in fairly well.

But then I also have all this undefined happy future fic that just happens in a distant, unspecified time post-series and I don't know where any of it would go.

I'm giving myself a headache!

Not all your fic has to form one single continuous canon, you know. Let it go. Relax... Surrender... free yourself of entanglements, for they trap you within Samsara...

LOL! The headache came from trying to figure out which ones I'd consider AU. You're the one who got me thinking about canon in my own fic - I blame you!

That's entirely up to you. (Although I want a pony. And possibly your firstborn.)

If you'd like, I can email you the html...
