For the first time in at least a year, I've written fic! (Well technically I wrote part of it a while ago, but i've brushed it up for posting now, since it relates to the section of the Chibi History of Middle-earth I just posted ( Read more... )

Very interesting, it's always great when you give further insights into bits from the comic in the form of these fics.

What can I say? The characterization of my favourite character in all of Middle Earth is of course spot-on, this is Galadriel with all her virtues and flaws.
Feanor is of course spot on as well. I love how you have her admit/fear she would have acted similarly, I've always known that Galadriel and Feanor are in some aspects more similar than the Lady of Lorien would ever care to admit, but you brought it to my mind again.
Also are you implying that galadriel fought in battles until she settled in Lorien?

I also like her two handmaidens; we do not see enough of the simple Elves in Tolkiens worth. Can you help me with the names again? Lagoreth is "the Swift One" (lagor=swift, rapid, -eth=feminine suffix) and Hestil...a feminization of hest (captain)? I loved Lagoreth taking the "direct path" to Celeborn's study.

If there is one tidbit I'd critique it's the dialogue in some places; I can grudgedly accept Lagoreth's modernized dialogue as a representation of (cruder) Sylvan language but Maedhros' "Oh, hi, Nerwen" was painful.
The dialogue between Galadriel and Feanor is, however, much better.

Thanks!

I don't picture her as being "a warrior", I think her experience at Alqualondë put her off that for life. But I also think that while heading East out of Beleriand in the First Age, and in the war against Sauron in the Second, she'd have taken up arms when necessary. Once she received one of the Three Rings, however, she had to "fight with other weapons", as it were, and reserve her strength for that.

I thought of the name 'Hestil' a while back, but as I recall I decided the name would be from the original root 'khel' meaning 'to command', rather than directly from 'hest' meaning 'captain'. So it means she's a 'commanding woman', basically. Or 'bossy' as Lagoreth would put it.

Regarding the dialogue - oddly, it's the 'high style' between Galadriel and Fëanor that I'm least happy with myself. I picture First Age elves chatting in Quenya exactly how modern people would speak in English, and it's only pretentious Dúnedain or hobbit translators 7000 years later who think it should all be re-rendered to make them sound like they're reciting from the Bible.
