I've got a theory: every issue of this arc will contain a cliffhanger apparent death of a major character.

I have a sinking feeling that Dawn is going to die for real here, and this will be the inciting event for a major emotional break for Xander. A rage-based one, I'm thinking, that Buffy might get the worst of ( ... )

I remember when we saw Renee impaled on the Scythe on the last page of an issue, I was going around saying. "La la la, she might not be dead really. After all, Willow can heal her and she's right there..." - and then she was dead. (Although I did note that they explained why Willow couldn't heal her, in a background detail.) So I'm certainly not writing off the possibiiity that Dawn might also be dead - and as you say, it will certainly be a trigger for Xander's bad feelings ( ... )

I'm worried about Dawn.
And, actually, after the breaking of the Seed I was waiting for something to happen to her, because she was created by the monks with magic. At the same time we knows that she's fully human - or, at least, I remember being said that in the show - so the allergic/mundane issue can be the problem. In anyway I'm seeing the Angst approching, especially for Buffy and I'm scared about Xander's reaction.
The rest of the issue was kinda MEH. I'm not so interested in this Severin saga, while there's Illyria involved (And I love Illyria!) but, I don't know ... meh!
Plus I'm so indifferent to Billy. I totally don't care about him.

Yeah, the Dawn situation is not a good one. It's just... I can't bring myself to believe they'd kill off one of the main cast characters, Buffy's own sister - and relegate it to one of the inside pages, rather than making it the cliffhanger on the final page. So I'm not too worried. But perhaps I should be, of course...)

I'm kind of curious to know if Severin does have an Evil Plan, beyond "Get really powerful and rule/destroy* (*delete as applicable) the world". It was hinted at this issue, and Simone's involvement does suggest there's more to it than that.

Nice to see you continuing with BtVS reviews here, the issue just did not excite me enough to master my laziness ( ... )

I assumed the special zompire was dusted too, to be honest - but it seemed such an anti-climax for her to be dispatched so unceremoniously, I started wondering if she might have escaped in the confusion.

Maybe the mystery will be something else, though - perhaps we'll discover that Severin or Simone is turning Slayers into zompires deliberately for some yet-unknown reason, and this example was just the first of many?

I agree that Buffy doesn't care about the Council or its members. She's allying with them purely out of convenience. Instead she's angry at both Simone and Severin because of unfinished business, and also, I think she's worried what sort of evil, apocalyptic plan they might be cooking up together.

The big reveal may be that Nisha, being a Slayer zompire, is able to pass both traits on to new zompires that she sired... and even if she herself is dusted, her "descendants" will generate a new breed of zompires with Slayer abilities. Since both vampire and Slayer traits are demon-based, it's possible they can both be passed on through the siring mechanism. Kind of like two strains of the flu combining to create a superbug.

Hmm. It's an interesting idea. I'm not sure I believe it's what they're doing here, but that's for narrative reasons: they've spent so long emphasising that Dawn is a normal human girl that suddenly re-introducing a plot idea from way back in Season 4 might go over the heads of most casual readers. If they were going to do it, I'd have expected some reminders to be worked into the story before now.

But you're absolutely right that Dawn and Buffy have a magical link to the extent that they're interchangeable in any magical ritual involving blood, so maybe a spell on one will affect the other too.
