(Review) BtVS 9.01 'Freefall' Part I

And here it is. Buffy Season Nine, episode 1, written by Joss. Very funny, occasionally downright silly, with a few hints of darkness and a few mysteries - though nothing so extreme as the 8.01 Giant Dawn reveal, you'll mostly all be glad to know. Not a lot of deep content, though: I'm reminded of the first half of 'The Freshman'. Buffy's kind of ( Read more... )

Thanks!

I can see why you might think Dawn has sadface in that scene, but it didn't come across like that to me. She's just a little serious/not smiling. A total contrast to Xander in the panel to the left of that one, who actually looks like he should have a black stormcloud over his head with little lightning flashes and pouring rain soaking his hair. In fact, it could be that Dawn is looking serious because she's concerned about Willow at that particular moment.

I can see Willow trying to get Buffy to understand what breaking the Seed means, but why is she still going on about it nine months later? (Or however long it's been.) To me, that says she's got a purpose; she needs to convince Buffy of something rather than just wanting to get her feelings off her chest. It wouldn't be like Willow to just keep on harping on about a bad thing over and over again unless she thought it was important.

Your Heinrich theory amuses me. Twenty minutes, eh? :) I don't think he's Severis (is that the name? Not Severin?) - I think Severis will be revealed later on, with us being led to believe he's a serial killer until we discover he's actually slaying vampires.

Oh yeah, I think it is Severin. Whoops!

I'm not disagreeing with your theory about Willow having a purpose. I definitely think she's trying to get Buffy to realize that badness is coming and they need to do something about it. I don't think Willow's accepted that breaking the Seed was the right thing, mostly because she doesn't seem to understand what Spike and Riley have said, that there were no other options at hand. But since the Seed is broken, the question becomes: what is Willow planning? Which is the story going forward. Maybe the reason Willow seems so reconciliatory with Buffy, rather than stewing, is that she realizes she needs to work with Buffy for her plan to move forward...? Hmm.

Maybe it's just my beware-strange-men radar going off, but Heinrich strikes me as a little bit worrisome. Twenty minutes alone in a stranger's apartment, someone who's apparently a bit antisocial, well, I'd be uncomfortable. Admittedly Buffy probably didn't feel worried because she's a Slayer and he's just a human. But what if he's not...

Also, Severin can't be this guys ~real name, can it?

Have you read Gene Wolfe's 'Shadow of the Torturer'? That's what the name Severin makes me think of. Which is not entirely comfortable.

Regarding the Seed - Spike and Riley may think that breaking it was the only option, but I think Willow simply doesn't accept that. She was prepared to defend it against all comers, and in full goddess mode and drawing directly on the Seed's own power, can we really say she was wrong? Aluwyn thought she could succeed. Even Twilight-possessed Angel mocked her, but didn't actually say she'd fail - he said she was missing the point. (Which, I gather, was that he believed Buffy would realise she couldn't turn her back on Twilight after all, and she and Angel would betray Willow and take the Seed themselves.)

I do think Willow needs Buffy's help... maybe on a personal level, maybe because she specifically was the one to break the Seed and conceive the new universe. Perhaps there's some power accessible through her to bring the Seed back or find a new one.

Something just occurred to me - Willow dumped Kennedy, pre-emptively, for fear that Kennedy would break up with her sooner or later. She was last seen pining for Saga Vasuki, who's unreachable. And here's she's with a girl who never seems to speak to her or even look at her, or return any of her affectionate gestures. Has Willow deliberately found someone who doesn't love her/she can't love, and is, basically, using her for sex, or to punish herself, or remind herself of what she doesn't have? That's kind of messed up for our supposedly got-her-life-together Will.

Why not? Severin is a normal name, not that common but certainly more common than, say, Willow.

I guess it depends on where he's from. In America, it's not that normal, and I've kinda been assuming he's from here.

Severin, Severin, speak so slightly,
Severin, down on your bended knee.
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly,
Taste the whip, now plead for me.

I am tired, I am weary,
I could sleep for a thousand years.
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colours made of tears.

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather,
Whiplash girlchild in the dark.
Severin your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him;
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart.
