i fear your presence, i'm frozen inside

Why hello there LJ *dusts you off*

I feel like a shitty blogger, but basically I blame school. Which I am currently freaking out about. Yes. Not only that but what to do after. I've sent job apps to two other places so we'll see how that goes. Sigh.

Anyhow. My bedroom is a mess because I've been slacking off on... well... everything. There are two chairs in my bedroom and one is used as a clothes "hamper", there to wait for me to fold and stow them into their proper drawers. My bed is full of essay materials. One corner of my floor is full of fic stuff. My closet floor is full of dirty clothes.

I suck. And I haven't yet finished this first essay (Alhambra) that I promised I'd get done tonight at the latest. I mean, I'm like 12 handwritten pages into it, and I'm actually nearing the very end so I'm not freaking out too much about it. But still. Letting yourself down is a huge downer.

I have to present some texts in class Thursday. Did my bit so far with a powerpoint and we'll see how the guys contribute. I know I'm not a big talker and one of them is the rambling type and the other is a little more talkative than me. Also due for that class is a formal presentation on our final projects. The informal presentation went well actually, and my project's a go. Basically, it'll be something like a mirror mosaic in the drawing-shape of my face, made of broken CD's, mirrors and aluminum sheets. Didn't get shot down too hard, it won't be too hard to make either. Some people have like three weeks to get computer-controlled stuff running smoothly and holy hell, I give them lots of praise if they can do it, but ya'll know I'm no programming whiz so freaking no I wasn't about to get myself into trouble there.

Another project I'm doing in a group is... well... Horror Barbies. Yep.  A girl in our group, for her first project earlier this semester, basically took beauty shots of Barbies she'd mangled and mutilated (they were gorgeous), and we're thinking of going that route and making a paparazzi shrine (maybe, but at least we'll try to take those horror shots inspired by horror movies). This project will definitely be cathartic. Not that I hated Barbies growing up (I actually preferred playing with cars but I had like 2 Barbies of my own), but they don't exactly impress upon young girls that they're beautiful no matter their shape and size...

Reading-wise, I started Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon sometime last week or before, I can't remember, and Claire and company are back in Scotland after their stint in France, and the Prestonpans battle has just happened. This is not my first reading of it, but the second time through was definitely still poignant. All the scenes about Faith nearly made me cry, even the bit when Jamie comes back and he and Claire have to reconnect. The battle from summons (fuck you, Jared Fraser, you're such a jerk. If you're such a staunch supporter then you could have left France and played warrior yourself) to "hospital" had my heart in my throat. I'm not a huge Jamie/Claire fan (proof: I've been ready for some Roger/Brianna scenes since the mega flashback started) but I do enjoy their scenes, funny, teasing, sexy, poignant and everything in between. Like I've said before, I spoiled myself early on with Roger/Brianna because I started reading the Outlander series all out of order... started with Fiery Cross, I believe. Roger, I blubbered so much inside when you were hanged. I mourn your beautiful voice. Most of all, though, these books are just snatches of life, ugly and lovely, no holds barred (literally). And Mrs Gabaldon is just so bloody gifted with words.

I know a lot of people are absolutely against an Outlander movie because it would taint a wonderful series, but I'm all for it, really. These books are categorised as romance, but as anyone who has read the books would tell you, it's much more than that. It's historical fiction, with the utmost research done into Jacobite Scotland, Scottish clan life, French life (and the bowel movements -- or lack thereof -- of Louis XVI! lol) and the years around the American Revolutionary War. It's science fiction, with much research done into time travel theory and the laws of physics (Gabaldon is one of a short list of authors whose time travel plots excite me). The books are also a thrillers in their own rights. If you have not met Jonathan Randall, Geillis Duncan and... oh, what is Jocasta's new husband's name in Breath? Oh oh oh, and Stephen Bonnet. It's gritty and sweet at once, and it's fabulous, and if you haven't read these freaking bricks, then what the hell are you waiting for? Get yerself to yer favourite library or bookstore and snatch a copy! Or, you know, you could wait the ten years it'll probably take for those people who optioned to make a movie out of the first book to get their groove on... I suppose I am scared they'll fuck up with historical inaccuracies or bad actors or simply a bad script, but I would love to see the pictures in my mind concretised :)

Anyway, I trust finishing this book will take another week, but in the meantime, I have an essay to finish :(

Also, my printer is on its very last stretch *kicks* Good fucking riddance when it dies completely. In the meantime, I always have mum's printer downstairs that actually prints almost like a laserjet. No effing blurring when I highlight!
