History

Illegitimate.

The word is certainly a weighty one but it can fully describe his past. Gokudera Hayato was the fruit produced between two people who were never meant to be. His mother, Lavina, was a beautiful and talented pianist while his father was the leader of an influential Mafia in Italy. The pairing would surely have been a remarkable one if his dad hadn’t already been a married man. Thanks to Mafia laws, Gokudera was taken from his mother and handed over to his father. He grew up for a part of his life without knowing the identity of his real mom, always assuming he was the legitimate child of his dad and his legal wife.

Three days out of the year, Lavina was able to visit her son. She never revealed her true role in his life, choosing to portray a woman who only came to bring gifts and spend time with him occasionally. Unfortunately, her fate with Hayato was severely short-lived, dying in a car accident on his third birthday. It was a devastating event, but it wouldn’t affect her child directly just yet. The following five years after her death were traumatizing ones for Gokudera. Her encouragement for him to master the piano ironically caused him more harm than actual good. Since he inherited her talent of playing the instrument, he was naturally given the obligation of performing at recitals. Bianchi, his half-sister, deeply cared about her younger brother. At the age of eight, she began to learn how to cook different types of food, all turning out to be poisonous. She unwittingly gave Hayato some cookies to eat before one of his acts, poisoning him in the process. The crowds praised his “unique” and “modern” skills enthusiastically afterward. It resulted in subsequent forced consumption of his older sister’s cooking prior to each new performance by his father. Aside from playing the piano, Gokudera was also probably subjected to various private lessons which honed his overall academic and mathematical abilities.

His life took a turn for the worse when he was eight. Overhearing a couple of gossiping maids, he found out the real identity of the woman who used to come briefly every year. A misunderstanding arose from the revelation, provoking him to run away from his home with an unmistakable bitterness towards his dad. For a while thereafter, he devoted his time to making many futile attempts at joining the Mafia, presumably roaming the streets between his travels. Because he was viewed as a weak musician and an oriental half-breed, no one wanted to accept him into their Famiglia. He was met by rejection everywhere he went until he finally decided to seek advice from Dr. Shamal, who worked for his family at the time, on how to become stronger. Consequently, he mastered the use of dynamites and ended up arriving in Japan six years later to test the worthiness of the next Vongola heir, Sawada Tsunayoshi.

And, now it’s time for the fillers…

Personality

Devotion.

Gokudera Hayato is one of the most devoted Guardians in the Vongola Familgia. He has quite literally handed his life over to the Tenth after he started to follow him. There is nothing he wouldn’t do for Tsuna even if it meant sacrificing his own life in the process. His actions aren’t based off of foolish obsession like many would think. He has a reason, and it is a good reason. Ever since he was little, he had been discriminated against for his half-breed status. He had to face the rejections of the Mafia over and over again, hearing their mockeries and insults. They thought he was a weak pianist who couldn’t amount to anything. The Tenth was different though. He actually saved him during their battle. It touched him beyond any describable measure because he had finally found someone who wasn’t all that bad.

Before he had met his Boss, Gokudera had been nothing less than a lone wolf. He didn’t enjoy socializing with other people because there were few he could trust. Even now, he still finds it difficult to fully open up. His loyalty, dedication, and pride has all been packaged, gift wrapped, and sent to Tsuna who he honestly regards as the one person he can always count on. Of course, throughout the subsequent time spent with the other Guardians, he had began to slowly change and started to view them as actual friends. Yamamoto has to be thanked for a good part of it since he was the one who technically opened his eyes to his own hostility. How could he be the Right Hand Man of the Tenth if he kept pushing off the members of his own Famiglia?

Once the revelation dawned on him, he gradually became a bit better around his comrades and it soon blossomed into real, worthwhile relationships over the years. He is now in his twenties, the Right Hand Man of the Vongola Famiglia. Even though he has retained most of his personality, he can be noted as more mature, outgoing, and laidback than how he was when he was younger. He has a hot temper and it can definitely be a problem at times, but he has managed to tone it down. His dislike towards adults has also been smoothed out over the course of time especially since he himself is one now.

Hardworking, confident, and determined, he centers his entire life on his revenge against Byakuran for what he has done to his Boss. There is a certain conflict, emptiness, and guilt meshing and mashing within him for what has happened. He couldn’t protect him. He couldn’t save him. It should have been him. If he has to draw his very last breath, he will use it to take down the Millefiori Famiglia in revenge for all of the pain and chaos they have evoked. Revenge has become his life, and it can be seen through the amounts of cigarettes he smokes in a day. It can be seen by the paperwork on his desk, the stress and tension on his face, the sleep he has lost in his eyes and the deflation of his spirits even when he is amongst his friends. There is no time to relax. They are at war.

On a side note, he is still a ridiculous urban legends fanatic. He loves anything and everything involved with extraterrestrial life or mythological creatures. If there is even a hint of a visit from aliens, he'll be the most enthusiastic and pumped up math geek around. Yes, math geek. Because he happens to be a mathematical genius. Which brings us to his abilities and strengths.

Abilities

Gokudera Hayato is a mathematical genius, as mentioned above. He loves to work on complicated theorems and formulas, and apply them to his weapons. As of now, he has his explosives, Vongola ring, and a system of box weapons called the Sistema C.A.I which uses the Storm Flame of the Guardians to empower.

Here’s the list of his current skills:

Dynamites
Vongola Ring
Storm Flame
Box Animal
Box Weapons
Sistema C.A.I.

Weaknesses

One of his main weaknesses is his distrust in others. It has led him to refuse help from his fellow comrades even when they’re in the midst of a battle. He doesn’t like to rely on others since he is more used to depending on himself. Even though he has opened up to his friends over the years, he still falls back on his old habits at times which can result in a lot of problems. His hot temperament is another notable feature. He is quick to snap at someone and it can easily provoke an argument. Although it doesn’t affect his fighting abilities too much, it hinders him in various ways especially when it comes to forming healthy relationships with people.

Bianchi.

Ever since his older sister had unintentionally poisoned him consistently with her cooking throughout parts of his childhood, he has formed a very noticeable weakness against her. He will feel sick to the stomach or even collapse whenever he sees her face. Gokudera is unable to remain in the same room as her unless she covers her face partially. If there is a Bianchi in sight, he can be expected to be gone within a second because he just can’t stand her.
