My computer desk is (quite deliberately) in a place which allows full view of deck and much of backyard. I am watching squirrels with amusement.
The squirrels in my yard are HUGE. They are too fat to fit through the chain-link fence, which is an impressive thing in early spring. I hope they have baby squirrels this summer. I will feed them and laugh.
The neighbor across said fence leaves whole slices of white bread in his backyard. I did not know this -- but it explains the starlings -- until I saw one of our enormous squirrels attempting to maneuver a whole slice of crust-free bread up the fence and into my deck-tree, just now. Talk about a logistic nightmare for the squirrel! The bread is large, unwieldy, and has an unfortunate tendency to crumble away from the bit gripped in one's mouth. It took him ten minutes to maneuver the thing successfully from grass, to fence, to post, to tree. I am impressed; he did not drop it once.
We have very competent squirrels.
