Fanmix: (Haven't You Noticed Me) Drifting (Glee - Dave Karofsky (/+Kurt Hummel))

Nov 16, 2012 04:35

My first ever entry for waywardmixes. The theme of the challenge was Angst. ETA: Fanmix won third place, thanks everyone!! ♥ I started to make two mixes, one of Dave Karofsky from Glee and a really angsty mix of Colin Mochrie/Ryan Stiles from Whose Line Is It Anyway?/Improv-A-Ganza. Dave won (and I'm actually quite proud of this mix). But the other mix will still happen because I'm kinda obsessed with them atm.

Fandom: Glee
Subject: David "Dave" Karofsky
Title: (Haven't You Noticed Me) Drifting
Warnings/Notes: this is mostly a character study of Dave's, from being a homophobic bully to revealing his true feelings to Kurt, accepting his homosexuality to himself and his attempted suicide (Tomorrow Is Today is an adapted suicide note Billy Joel wrote, you are warned!). He's the most interesting character Glee ever had (and probably the most realistic), shame they had to mistreat him the way they eventually did. Title was taken from the Civil War's song Falling.

ABOUT | Dave Karofsky was a minor character in season one of Glee who taunted McKinley High's Glee club, especially out-and-proud Kurt Hummel. In one of Glee's best episodes, season two's Never Been Kissed, it was revealed that Dave's actually gay (01+02). After, he kept acting outwardly homophobic for appearance's sake, even going so far to threaten Kurt's life if he ever reveals that Karofsky has kissed him, which prompted Kurt to change schools (03). After The Sue Sylvester Shuffle and Born This Way, Karofsky slowly made his way to self-acceptance, he and Santana acted as each other's beards and they formed an anti-bullying alliance to win Prom King/Queen (04). Dave offers Kurt a heartfelt apology which was accepted (05). After his win as Prom King, he was too scared to dance with Kurt (who won Prom Queen) (06). Since then we learned that he's moved schools to have a quiet senior year to play football. Accepting his sexuality, he was a regular at a gay bar outside of town where he and Kurt met once. Karofsky told Kurt he's in love him in the Valentine's episode of season three, but was turned down (07). (However, Kurt said they can be friends.) This conversation was overheard by a classmate of Dave's who proceeded to out him in front of his teammates and probably his school in On My Way. Having no one to talk to about the bullying that ensued (including his mother who turns out to be seriously homophobic, and Kurt who kept refusing to take his calls) (08), he tried to commit suicide by hanging himself in the closet (09+10). The last time we saw Dave, Kurt visited him in the hospital and painted him a bright future with a husband and a child (11). According to Brad Falchuk, Dave Karofsky will not return because his story has been told and he received a happy ending. Thus said, Brad Falchuk is an asshole extraordinaire. That's why I added my own version of happy end where Dave and Kurt do find each other in the distant future (12).

01. Matchbox Twenty | Stop

All the times I've given in
You fit me like a second skin
And one by one, I will begin
To wear you on the days I'm feeling thin
02. Daughter | Landfill
This is torturous
Electricity between both of us
And this is dangerous
'cause I want you so much
But I hate your guts
I hate you
03. Deb Talan | Unraveling
A river of tangled string
you are unraveling
and no one else seems to mind.
You keep it to yourself, stay numb and act fine.
You wear the truth under your sole, like a pebble
It makes you limp and sway
But it will out someday

04. Syntax | Pride
Do you believe in reinvention
Do you believe that life is holding the clue
Any way to face the silence
Any way to face the pain that kills you

Your smile shine a little light, alright
Don't hide, shine a little light
Give up on your pride
05. Nina Nesbitt | Little Lion Man (cover)
Weep for yourself, my man
You'll never be what is in your heart
Weep little lion man
You're not as brave as you were at the start

Rate yourself and rake yourself
Take all the courage you have left
Wasted on fixing all the problems
That you made in your own head
06. Natalie Merchant | Break Your Heart
People shallow self absorbed
See the push and shove for their rewards
With nothing nice on their minds
You can read about it in their eyes

People ruthless, people cruel
The damage that some people do
Full of hatred, full of pride
It's enough to make you lose your mind

07. Ellie Goulding | Believe Me

I can't stop this music traveling round with me wherever I go
It's playing for you
I can't stop the voice unraveling round me whatever I do
It's talking to you
The world dances to the rhythm of its own
Heart beating for you, however you lose
So speak to me
Believe, believe, believe me
08. Barenaked Ladies | Half A Heart
(alternate, slightly more acoustic version)
Anyone with a half a heart would help me out
Before they ever let the other half find out
But if they could see how far I've let you down
Anyone with half a heart would let me drown

In the space between sleep and sleeplessness
We redress all our wounds
If we replace all this hopeless hopelessness
Then we could rest
09. Billy Joel | Tomorrow Is Today

So I listen for an answer
But the feeling seems to stay
And what's the use of always dreaming
If tomorrow is today

Still I'm waiting for the morning
But it feels so far away
And you don't need the love I'm giving
So tomorrow is today

10. Ben Folds Five | Air

They hold my hand and ask me to pull through
A voice I know says "Dear, he probably can't hear you"
Coming up for air
I'm coming up for air

11. Snow Patrol | Signal Fire
In the confusion
And the aftermath
You are my signal fire

The only resolution
And the only joy
Is the faint spark of forgiveness
In your eye
12. The Civil Wars | 20 Years

And if it means I'll be waiting twenty years
And twenty more
I'll be praying for redemption
And your note, underneath my door
