I can see it somewhat re: Bilbo, but dude, when the big ol' wizard that's saved your ass multiple times, and who is helping you just out of the goodness of his heart (and who you asked to find a fourteenth member) says "this dude will be useful, trust me!" you should maybe trust the wizard!
And it's no wonder they didn't have a watchman... I seem to recall one of the earlier chapters mentioning one of the Interchangable Dwarves *always* being the one on watch at night... that shit's gotta get tiring!
They have no cleric. And their wandering damage table seems to be... forgiving. :p
I mean really, how long are they on the road in the book, and how many random encounters do they have? (And the goblins/wargs I don't think could even count as a random encounter... too big and obviously prepared.)
