I got a notification from E*Trade in the mail (passed on to me by my mother) that the assets in my account were going to be transferred to the state of Wisconsin because of inactivity, and to resolve this I needed to log in to the account.
I couldn't log in because, even though their forgotten password system worked and I got my password reset, their system requires a phone number now and it didn't like my Canadian one.
I called and talked to someone in tech support about logging in to close my account since I think having a US-based account in Canada is messy. He transferred me to a broker who made the sale of stock for me. He waived the broker-assist fee because of my inability to log in to the system: that was nice because it would have been almost half of the approximately $60 USD I'll get from selling the shares of Allscripts (MDRX) that I got for free as an employee many years ago and, frankly, had almost completely forgotten about. It's the only stock I've ever owned, so there isn't a lot of room in my brain devoted to such things!
And they don't have provisions for depositing to a Canadian bank, so they're mailing that $60 check to my mother, whose address, fortunately, was still my address of record on the account, otherwise they couldn't have gotten it to me.
Then I just have to figure out depositing a US check in Canada and I'll be $60 USD richer. Thanks Allscripts...
