[Rex holds up some nerdy diagrams of the mechanical dragon he had in port, modified for, uh, compatibility with real physics and stuff. Or real for GI Joe's world of sinking ice ( Read more... )

ssssscience?, ana, rex is a terrible boyfriend, iago needs a tag, acting normal

The mechanical dragonlings engineers craft in Azeroth are bigger than that, but they're built for combat.

[Innnnnteresting. He loves himself some impractical-but-flashy weapons.] How large are they?

[Have some return diagrams, though they're not especially detailed, more like sketches, and some parts of them are a little fudged. It's about the size of a medium-large dog.] Something like that, though I've never tried to build one. ...They do flap, though.

[He looks them over.] Given the size, the frame must be extremely lightweight. Is it hollow? Or... is something like 'magic' involved?

Sometimes we use essences or elemental materials, more rarely with things that are actually enchanted. But there's nothing magical in how they're put together.

I don't know the exact components for the dragonlings, though I think they're mostly mithril and arcanite. I worked on more practical things when I had the time for it - shredders and reapers can be used for things besides combat and looking pretty.

Typically, my projects are more practical, but sometimes I enjoy some recreational engineering.

Shredders and reapers? I presume the names are self explanatory.

Probably. Reapers started out as mechanized scarecrows, modified to include scythes to help in harvesting crops. Adding turboboosts, a thrash function, and changing the programming lets them fight effectively enough, but they can also be enlarged and rearmored for better damage and endurance. If the original design's kept mostly intact, they can still be repurposed for field work.

I was less involved with the shredders, since I had goblins working with me, but essentially they're one-person half-tanks made for clearcutting forests or processing lumber as quickly as possible. So, saws of all sorts, launchers, bombs...
