Well, I just finished watching The Phantom of the Opera silent film. The original, based on Gaston Leroux's novel. The novel is nonfiction by the way. and they did better than ALW in some parts.....and in others.....worse. They had Erik escape from an island where he was prisoned as criminally insane. not true. He fled persia becaue they were going to kill him for being the creator of all the "devices" he made for the sultan, they didn't want the secrets spreading. also, Daroga (persian word for police captain) saved him and was The Persian. In the movie they made the persian part of the secret police and named him Ledroux and he had been studying the phantom for months. bullshit. also, they made the whole situation between christine and raoul weird. One thing they got right was that he lived in an actual house that he built, slept in the coffin, and the makeup was absolutely STUNNING!!! it fits the description in the book to the nine's!!! They also finally had the proper ending and the chandelier incident and the disappearances. and they had the torture chamber and the reed!!!!!!yay!!!!!! but they added on an extra hour with this chase through and out of paris which is not in susan kay or gaston leroux's novels. so it was so-so
