I have to say that RE4 took the series in a new way. And RE5 is just as good of a game as RE4 so far as in it's the exact same game. Not just in gameplay but even opening scenario except now I'm feeling a little more limited and forced down a linear path. This isn't bad but it isn't good either.
Moving on the game fun so far but it seems to rely on the fact that the only new innovative thing they got going is the whole co-op thing (which i will take this time to remind you has been beatin' into a bush at this point, gears, halo, Army of 2 etc.) but hey I thought I'd give it a go with a buddy or something. Well too fucking bad because you can only play co-op online. now maybe it's just me and I didn't do the research on the game that I should have but somewhere along the fucking road a lot of developers A: decided that all gamers do not have real life friends next to them and B: all gamers have good internet connections.
I'm sorry if I want to sit down next to my friend without him having to get another console, tv and log onto the fucking internet to play with me. Why is this so bad to include especially if you're selling point is the fucking co-op?
Okay, so I can't get online to play with anyone and can't do it locally. Gotta go it alone. It really isn't bad. You're teammate AI is rather competent and will save you and do damage to enemies as needed. you can also command her to pick up items if you know she needs them etc. not bad. I really have no complaints with the AI so far on her behalf. I do have a complaint that it seems like (as of yet; let's be honest I've only played the opening scenario plus a bit) I cannot switch between chris and her. this is a little gay when over all it shouldn't matter which one I have and both have the same inventory menu and play mechanics.
speaking of inventory, while I miss playing tetris with a suave attache case, the real time interface is something I have no problems with. well almost none. you can set items to up, down, left, right on the D-pad for quick use or switch and have 5 other slots to hold items in. so normally two healing items a pistol and a bigger weapon will work well. you can also give items to your teammate from here which isn't bad but can get hectic and troubling in some situations but normally is managable. What is bad is in the heat of the moment you tell your partner to pick something up, or she has ammo you don't, that you really need and need to bring up her menu to make it switch to you. This brings up a seperate 9 panelled menu just like yours that you have to move through as well. this extra bit of real time menu navigation is just enough to make it frustrating instead of pratical. this wouldn't be so bad, I imagine, if I was playing with a real person but hey--like I mentioned no local multiplayer--so I nearly ended in a big pile of ass fuck in the very beginning because of this. I guess with time I'll get used to it but it feels more like a challange to overcome a rock I don't need to climb as opposed to climbing over a rock to eat some icecream.
oh yeah, weapon shop. for whatever reason they decided taking 2 extra seconds to talk to stratigcally placed merchant isn't worth your time anymore. instead in between each chapter you defaultly get to organize your equipment and upgrade them if you wish if you have the money. this is lame. you don't have to struggle to survive to find it it's just there. what's with this fucking generation and giving you a goddamned store whenever the fuck you want. MGS4 did this and I think (no matter how great I think the game is and how much I love it) it ruined a big part of the original core gameplay that made the MGS series what it was. at least you can't buy fucking ammo in RE5. Also you don't even have to get to the end of the level to get the store. if you hit a checkpoint, after the game autosaves, quite out and reload you'll be presented with the organize/upgrade screen before hopping back to where you were. I feel like we're babied a little too much in this age of gaming and it is making game less fun for an againg gamer who is from the generation of the original nintendo and played an atari when he was little.
I know all of this is skeptical and brings out the bad points of the game and it may be hard to convince you otherwise but the game is solid. If you liked RE4 and like the RE storyline and can get over the real time inventory navigation issues (only bad because by yourself you have to manage 2 at once.) then you will like this game. that's about all there is to say.
