She took a few steps foreward, watching as the buildings and streets changed, the soft glow of the stone replaced by cold, dark brick and pavement. This... This was creepy. At home, there were plenty of things to fear in spite of the light, but at least you could see them coming. You had a chance to run, even if the monsters preferred it that way ( ... )

She picked up her speed, rounding a corner to find mist. The terrifying figure in it brought her skidding to such a sudden halt that she almost lost her footing. Beyond it, she could barely make out her friend, curled into a ball and calling for help. The mist seemed alive.
She acted without thinking, transforming the air around the creature's head into a ball of methane gas, then set the atoms around it vibrating to create enough heat...
The creature had a moment to begin choking before it found itself engulfed in fire. As its screams echoed off of the surrounding brick walls. Polly dove around its staggering and flailing bulk, skidding to her knees beside her friend and grasping for her hand.
"Ran Fan! Ran Fan, we have to run!"

She looked down at her legs, feeling numb on the inside. Her shoes were melting to the pavement below her feet, and this did not seem to strike her as weird. "I do not know what I am doing here. Or why I cannot move forward."

A glance down, and she could see her reflection in the sheen of the polished marble floor. "U-uwah, wahwahwah," she sputtered, backing away. "This is too nice, I should not walk on this..."

"Don't worry, it's just a floor." she said, matter-of-factly. "You're s'posed to walk on it."
With a bit of scrambling, the girl stood. "I brought us here, to someplace where that... whatever-it-was that was attacking you might not find us. This is Mother's house, after she..." The girl looked away. "...left, and before the Chronovores came. So long as I don't think about them very hard, it should be safe, here."

Now she stared around in amazement. "This is where you lived? But it is like a palace. A weird foreign palace... Are you a noble? Or a princess?"

She leaned out from the balcony to see what was below them. It was like... a sea of pastel-colored sandcastles lying about in chunks and crumbling pieces, or shards of broken stained glass. Ran Fan had never seen buildings with towers and spires and parapets and things like these. Nothing could be seen moving below. No animals or birds or people. It was much too quiet to seem normal.
"What happened to it?" she asked Polly softly. "Where is everyone?"

Polly propped her elbows against the balcony railing and cradled her chin in her hands.
"Everyone else has gone still. It's what happens to us, when there are no new thoughts, no new ideas. They exiled themselves from Time--because of a terrible war, the Doctor says--and this was what happened because of it."
She frowned, eyes slightly haunted. "Their minds aren't working right anymore." she whispered. "They can't find the will to move. They're slipping away--they're forgetting. The buildings are fading with their memories."

She looked down at the city in dismay. "It must have been so nice here," she said softly. "It is beautiful even in ruins like this. But it is not like Xing or or like Amestris at all."
Her eyes traced the pattern of the city streets, shining in the pale light like graceful threads as they stretched off into the distance. She tried her best to imagine living here. "Were you happy here, Polly?" she asked.

What could an immortal person be so afraid of? What could be dangerous to Polly, she wondered. Perhaps a being that ate or sucked ideas or energy from the mind? Ran Fan was sure her weapons would not be much use against such a thing, but she would try her best to do what her friend said.

In the distance, the creatures were now visible. Dead-white and eyeless, they soared toward the two girls, fast on leathery wings. Their dagger-like teeth were bared, grinning and gleaming as if with their own light.
Polly turned and ran back into the house, casting a glance behind to be sure Ran Fan was following. If the creatures got inside, she knew what the memory would be. The gleaming marble of the entryway would run red. She did not yet fully trust her control of the creatures, and if she succumbed to them, she knew Ran Fan wouldn't leave her to them. They'd both be done.
