Creepy.

There was really no other word for it. This situation was just really. Fucking. Creepy. Okay, given that when Yosuke had first walked through the door with a 360 on his personality? Gin had been feeling pretty good about it. Maybe Yosuke was sick again, maybe he was melancholy, who knew? All that mattered was that it meant the shift was bound to run more smoothly, at least for the first hour or two until he started perking up.

But then two hours became three, three to four... even after his break he didn't cheer up. It was like working with a fucking possessed ghoul. So... creepy.

Still, priorities. Gin couldn't be concerned about his nearly lifeless co-worker until nearly at the end of their shifts because it was unusually busy that night. So when Gin finally did approach him (casually, arms folded on the counter and with an easy smirk on his lips) it was almost closing time.

"Penny for your thoughts?"

Yosuke absently patted himself down when Gin spoke, like he was looking for his wallet or a lighter or something. Then it occured to him that thoughts weren't the sort of thing that could be handed over like a wine key, used, and returned. He glanced back up and shook his head a bit apologetically. Sorry, pal, I put the change in the tip jar.

"Huh? Oh. Um." Confused, his eyes wandered back to the last few customers in the bar. They seemed to be doing just fine, though. What did Gin want, again? Thought? Crap. He'd been trying not to think all night. "That black hole thing is a new one, huh?"

Whoa.

There was a new one. With a raised eyebrow, he wondered if he'd actually have to explain the metaphor to what was apparently a zombie Yosuke before he actually tried to put a penny somewhere. (And where the hell would you get a penny on this ship anyway?)

Thankfully, Yosuke answered before it got that bad and Gin was spared the effort of having to dig/reject some change. Win-win.

"That's what you're worried about?" He asked, resting his elbow on the counter and placing his chin on top of his hand.

"Worried?" Yosuke echoed, still mostly absently. He realized, then, that what he'd considered casual conversation was, in fact, the sort of thing that would worry most people. Impending doom and all that crap, yeah, okay. That was pretty serious, probably. He pasted the smile back on and nodded. Yeah, sure, who wouldn't be worried about getting sucked into a big empty hole in the universe?

"Oh, yeah. It's probably that." Yosuke shrugged casually and went back to cleaning the wine lists for a second, only remembering to wrench the smile off of his face a few minutes later. Ow. His jaw was starting to hurt from that. But since he had Gin's attention at the moment, he might as well take advantage of it to run something by him before he made it official.

"Uh, say. I've been here for a while, right? A year and a half, not counting wormholes and that day I was sick." He polished another wine list expertly and set it to the side, remembering to paste the smile back on and try to look sincere. "That's probably long enough, right?"

Okay, now he was starting to get suspicious.

"Long enough for what?" He inquired, eyes narrowing as the conversation took a distinctly strange turn. Okay, so maybe it wasn't the black hole that had Yosuke so... weird. But if that wasn't it, then what? What was so troubling that his perky co-worker and olive thief would be so down on himself?

Well, at a guess: A) he'd been dumped again, B) he'd just lost someone or C) he'd just realized how much shit life was right now.

Since C required some actual self-awareness, he counted that one out immediately. Besides, the kid was way too young for a mid-life crisis. So that left A or B and- sadly- both were pretty fair options.

"Uh, well." Yosuke frowned down at the wine list he was cleaning at the moment. "You know. I can't wait tables for the rest of my life. I mean, I suck at it anyway."

He scrubbed at the menu as if he'd found a particularly stubborn spot on it. "If I'm going to be stuck here forever I might as well pretend to ca-uh." He stopped scrubbing, finally, and blinked. The scowl that had been on his face fell away and the blank mask was back, the corner of his mouth twitching like he was trying to get the smile back, but not quite making it.

"I just. Uh. I thought it might be nice to get a better room, in case...just in case. Or maybe just go back to the clinic. Or the park. Or who cares, right?" At this point he's definitely just venting, but he can't seem to shut up now in spite of himself. "I don't need a job anyway. I can quit this one and sign up for school and sleep through it and stay up all night throwing darts at the wall and nothing bad can happen to me anyway, right? So why bother?"

As a bartender, Gin knows when to hold a conversation with someone and when to shut up and listen. (That he doesn't do so most of the time is simply because he's usually off the clock then.) Rather than make a verbal comment as Yosuke starts to finally open up, Gin pretends to be occupied with arranging the napkins in front of him, arranging the squares into neat little stacks.

It's only when Yosuke quiets down for a moment that he actually does acknowledge that he's still listening rather than letting it in through one ear and out the other.

"Sounds like you have it all planned out." The voice is calm and rather blank, not letting any of Gin's real feelings through. The feelings that say Yosuke is full of horseshit and he's talking like someone who's given up.

"What's the point of making plans in a place like this?" Yosuke has never been all that ambitious anyway. The first time Renge had asked him what he wanted to do with his life, he'd been sort of baffled by the question. It hadn't ever really occurred to him that he might get a choice until recently. But now that they were all stuck in space it was too late anyway. Black holes and whatever aside, every time he'd so much as been ready to get promted in the past, Yosuke had fallen smack into the nearest worm hole. It was like clockwork. He shoved the wine lists aside, irritably.

"You shouldn't bother, either. If you make plans, they'll just get ruined. If you make friends-" And there his voice broke, and he glanced away. After a few seconds of silence he scrubbed his face with his hands and picked the wine lists up again. They were polished well enough, he supposed. Time to put them back on the tables. "Never mind. It doesn't matter." He concluded.

And that about summed it all up, didn't it? Nothing really mattered, anymore.
