[Pip likes bars.

Maybe not for the conventional reason of 'drinking your woes away', as someone of his profession might be inclined to do in places like this-- no, Pip wasn't much for wallowing in woe, despite all the things he's seen and all the things he might have lost. No, Pip isn't a wallowing person: he's a celebration kind of guy, indulging in cheap booze and pretty women whenever he can, absorbing civilian life and living it while he's not on the battlefield, getting paid to throw away his life.

It's a strange juxtaposition, but he lives it. He doesn't value himself, but he values time he spends with good company-- an unconscious distinction, honed by years of reflection and hangovers.

So. He's sitting two seats away from Noin, puffing a cig and fiddling with his glass of beer, lips curled in amusement, single eye narrowed but not unpleasantly.]

Bored?

[A soft hum of noise again, her previous lessons with a singer starting to show a little as she actually decides to hum a note instead of her usual sound. She'd been watching him, of course, but hadn't expected him to speak.

She chuckles richly, purple eyes flicking to his face, shaded under her bangs.]

In a manner of speaking. Come here often?

Nice pickup line.

[He laughs, popping his cigarette out from between smiling lips and stubbing it out, watching the smoke dissipate before fixing his gaze on Noin.]

When I want to get drunk after a long day, oui. Which is most days.

[A chuckle, she waves her glass at him a little, winking.]
Can you imagine it's all I came up with after reading Shakespeare?

[But she nods.]
Ahh, to actually get drunk that quickly and stay that way...
[A playful smirk. I think she may be in the mood for a challenge, Pip.]

[He downs the rest of his glass and slides it aside, standing up and moving to sit next to his companion, bridging the gap of two seats. He waves to the bartender to give him another drink, and then thinks about it, and asks the bartender to buy Noin another drink, too. Even though she already, you know, has one.]

It usually takes a few drinks and maybe a pretty lady or two to get me going.

[He returns the wink with his single eye.]

[Ooh? This one was bold. She smirks a little back, not intimidated in the slightest before leaning a little closer to him and looking around pointedly.]

Well then, perhaps I could find some for you considering I am already married.
[Annnnd she picks that new drink up with her left hand and ring on her finger and downs it in one go, cool at the Fire she's been nicknamed for, eyes solidly on him]

[Flirty Frenchman hardass here. He's used to rejection (teasingly or not teasingly), so his reaction is to laugh and give her a crooked little grin, not deterred in the least. He doesn't look away, but merely throws both his hands up in that universal sign of surrender.]

Guilty as charged.

[Besides, he has a girl he likes! Can't be too pushy with the other ladies.]

A married woman, hein? Lucky enough to have your husband on the ship?

[Oh man, she knows many flirty French, Russian and otherwise inclined folks. It happened when your past experiences were in a military academy full of snobbish rich nobles. But it is good that he took it as friendly, because she certainly wasn't going to tell him to take a hike. Good company was hard to find, after all.

She smirks back, completely enjoying the French accent she picks up, perfectly willing to believe that, despite the babelfish ruining it, he was indeed speaking French. Her own voice altered to a richer Italian tone, reflecting her alteration to the language.]
Judge and jury sign off on that one?

[A warm humming noise, she nods and gestures to a blonde haired man currently speaking to others in the bar and who seemed to be enjoying himself.]
Surprisingly, yes, and on both accounts. Admittedly, I didn't expect to survive this long.

shh I saw nothing but amazing stolethatkiss May 25 2011, 21:19:20 UTC
Unanimous decision.

[Ah, an Italian! Pip can somehow recognize it despite the Babelfish as well, though he doesn't speak the language-- but he's a European, and he catches the way she speaks her syllables and can easily identify the accent as Italian. WHO CARES ABOUT THE BABELFISH WE EUROPEANS GOTTA STICK TOGETHER

When she motions towards the other man, Pip glances over his shoulder at him and chuckles, looking back and forth between Noin and him.]

So you took your man along with you to the bar, but you're not drinking with him? Seems a little bit strange, non?

[Not that he'll pry. He just looks amused, and takes a sip of his drink.]

Hopefully he's not going to come and beat the shit out of me for talking to his wife.

[Good to know! And agreed, they all have to stick together, let alone that if they ever...did maybe lose the babelfish (on purpose or otherwise), she could speak French and mayhaps make him feel a little more at home.

She switches to (in her mind), speaking French, admittedly the tone is a little rusty. Zechs was the one who was more French, not her, finishing off her other drink with a soft exhale of breath.]
Oui. It's odd, I admit, but it works. We're not...obsessed with each other. I'd like to say we have more words that go unspoken between us.

[In other words, no, Zechs would not beat him up. Let alone the fact that Noin probably could take Pip on her own. Well, maybe. It would be an interesting call if it ever came down to it in the hand to hand sense. Noin was better at piloting giant mechs and making and organizing tactical maneuvers considering she would've been the top all time student had she opted out in favor of him for complicated reasons ( ... )

[Pip can't speak Italian at all-- maybe paisan, and a few food vocabulary, but not much. But he can speak English like a pro, despite his accent... He recognizes the French as such, though, and smirks a little appreciatively, raising his glass in a silent gesture of acknowledgement.]

Good for you husband. You'd be amazed at how offended some bastards get when I'm just talking to a nice little lady.

[If it ever comes down to having to fight, Pip will-- he's sweet with the ladies but when he means business, he means business. But then again, he's not going to go around picking fights, especially not with this well-spoken woman that he's just met.

Reminds him a little of someone he knew back home, really.]

[She finds his accent charming, let alone all the rest of his behavior. He just seems like a nice guy to hang out with and get along with - and she swears she can smell...gun oil? Something military clings to him, she knows this, but to what degree.. Hmm...

And little lady indeed, he's taller than Zechs, good god. Thankfully she's had practice looking up.

She chuckles, extending her hand.]
So I've heard. My name's Noin, by the way. A pleasure to meet a fellow such as yourself aboard.

[Aww, how sweet - well, Noin didn't like to fight to the death, but she enjoyed a good fight. Hopefully they never would, but who knew.]

[It's probably the smell of gasoline from the jeep he's been riding around for his job, but even underneath that, there may be the lingering scent of gunpowder mingled with cigarettes. A real rough-and-tumble guy, this one. He comes from a long line of mercenaries, and war's in his blood.

He grins that same crooked grin again and takes her hand, shaking it firmly before letting go and giving her a salute, which is something he's more used to doing.]

Captain Pip Bernadotte, at your service. Pleasure's mine.

[He pops out a cig from a carton and lights it with all the practice of someone who's been doing to for many, many years.]

I'm off-duty, though, so no need to call me Captain. Unless you like it like that.

[oh Pip you smoothtalker]

[Perhaps it is, it reminds her of airfields, landing strips and war after all. Ideals, conflicts, purposes and...memories of faces and students she'd not completely forgotten.

A blink and smile of surprise.]
I'm sure you do your men proud. [She gives him a pure OZ military salute right back, face serious for the moment it lasts.]
Captain Bernadotte.

[A soft, absent smile. This was better than she expected.]
Sorry, I reserve that kind of talk for other places, but if it will serve to boost your ego...

[Her posture is that of someone who's similarly military-oriented, but it has an air of training, of discipline and hard work-- Pip's worked hard as well, but his training was more informal, and it shows through in his not-so-upright posture, the languid way he lowers his arm, the easygoing smile on his lips.]

Ego boosted, merci.

[And he can't help but laugh, because why are they saluting each other in a bar?]

Formally trained, are we? Rank?

"She was a lieutenant," Zechs replied, stopping by after having a few drinks with Sho. He stood just behind Noin to her side with a casual smirk. "Mind if I join you both?"
