Rather than in the lobby itself, sitting to the side out on the steps leading up to the entrance, Edgeworth will find quite possibly the most miserable prosecuting attorney this courthouse as seen in a very long time. She seems extremely perplexed, staring at the neat orbits of paperwork arranged around her, as if something isn't right.

Clearly something isn't, if the slightly sick and nervous expression on her face is anything to go by.

"Oh no... you have to be kidding me." Her voice is full of dismay as she starts to gather her papers up again. "They didn't seriously mix up the fingerprint file, did they? As if this wasn't hard enough already..."

"The prosecution's and defense's lobbies exist for a reason, miss."

Should this bespectacled young lady look up, she'll find that she's being looked down at -- in more ways than one -- by a man in a burgundy suit who is slightly higher up the stairs.

Chie nearly jumps where she's standing, and smiles a bit sheepishly, tucking her paperwork into her document case. "Sorry about that, I guess? Something seemed off in the files they gave me, so I kinda just stopped to look right away." She sighs a bit, clearly unhappy and discouraged. "I'm not cut out for this..."

[ooc: She's wearing her glasses, but doesn't need them to see, so they're not in every icon. They just help her focus.]

"Are they not the ones you requested?" Edgeworth queries, walking down to the young lady's level once the files are out of the way. "For that matter, if you are unsuited for the courtroom, then for what reason have you found yourself in this position?"

"Well, they're really not. Someone mixed up the files." Chie blinks a bit, then smiles. "You must be new to the Thor, huh? Most jobs around here only last a month. I was signing up for a different job, when the Guide glitched and put my name under "prosecuting attorney" instead."

"Indeed; I was only just released from the refugee reception area today after contending with Vogon bureaucracy for, apparently, far longer than most would be willing to. After all, a claim of literally apocalyptic magnitude requires quite a strong body of evidence to corroborate it."

The only reason Chie was able to keep up with that language was the fact that she'd been hearing it all day, every day, for the past couple weeks. "You actually put up with them long enough to ask?" She can't help but let an appreciative whistle. "That's amazing. Did they actually have anything?"

Edgeworth took in a silent breath before answering. "...Yes. Among other things, there was a full written record of the interstellar lawsuit involved, a record of the transmission warning of our impending demise and its origin, a video of the demolition, and contact information for several beings capable of verifying the story."

"Huh... you have to wonder if it was fabricated though, y'know? All this technology-- I bet it wouldn't be hard to make a fake video or something." Chie shrugs. "Can't say I looked into it myself, though. Way too many forms."

"That is why the contact information was necessary," Edgeworth pointed out. "You are correct that in such a context, fraud would be trivial; however, it is my own experience that lies rarely withstand a thorough cross-examination. I further intend to have the video analyzed, once I can afford to hire an expert capable of doing so, as well as do further research on the matter now that I have an idea of where to begin."

"Sounds like a great plan to me. I can't say I know too many analysts, myself, but if I can help, let me know. I'm better at investigating than I am prosecuting, if that helps." Chie grins and pulls out a slip of paper with some contact information on it-- it'd be a business card, if it was stiffer and a bit smaller. It has her name, apartment address, and more importantly, the location and numbers for the Prosecutors' office. "Here. If nothing else, one of the other attorneys at the office might be able to help."

Edgeworth accepts the paper, gives it a look, then bows. "This should be most helpful indeed, Miss Satonaka." The prosecutor then reaches inside his suit to pull out a business card of his own -- a proper one, with a light beige marbled pattern -- and offers it to the young lady.

Chie takes it with a small laugh and reads the name on it quickly. "I'm sorry, Mister Edgeworth. Guess I forgot to introduce myself. But, you're a real prosecutor, right? If you've got some time, could you give me some tips on how to present in court? I mean..."

Chie tucks the card away, obviously very embarrassed to be asking this at all. "I can put all the pieces together, and I can explain it to one or two people... but as soon as I get up there, I just fall apart. I'm scared somebody's gonna walk away scott-free because I can't explain myself right."

"I cannot very well allow such a situation to stand, now can I?" Edgeworth replied with a short-lived grin. "We should move to a more private locale before beginning our discussion, however; I would suggest the prosecutor's lobby, but unfortunately I doubt that a temporary hire would be allowed to bring a stranger unrelated to the case there."

"That's true, but..." Chie looked a bit thoughtful before continuting. "Hey, if you don't have a job yet, I could offer you one as a consultant for the rest of the month. Then you'd have access, and get some extra income until the next mission post." She'd be able to pay at best a somewhat decent wage, but...

Perhaps the commonality of temporary jobs made their holders pull more weight than Edgeworth had expected.

"I had merely signed up for courses at the university," the burgundy-clad man replied. "I am used to managing large amounts of work; I am confident in my ability to manage both, if you can accept having anything less than the entirety of my time."
