There's silence, as no one answers for a while-- but a few moments later, there's the sound of languid footsteps and the door opens, revealing a rather haggard-looking man on the other side. It's clear that he hasn't been out of the room all day, and he has his violin tucked under one arm. But even with the minimally-groomed exterior, Holmes' eyes are sharp, flitting up and down the newcomer quickly and efficiently.

"Ah. You are... Canada, I take it? Welcome to 3-8."

Canada blinks at how unkept Sherlock Holmes looks - it's even more noticeable in person. The stuffy scent of tobacco wafts out of the room (as he had been warned). The man's sharp eyes make him a touch nervous, but he's overwhelmed with relief when he gets Canada's name right on the first go.

"Yes! Thank you!" Canada smiles brightly in return. "A pleasure to meet you in person, Sherlock." He shifts Kumajirou to one arm to hold out his hand for a handshake.

Holmes isn't one for forgetting people or names, unless they prove to be of no interest to him-- even then, he has a faint recollection of at least their faces. He reaches out and takes Canada's hand, shaking it firmly, scrutinizing him still as he lets go.

"The pleasure is mine, I assure you."

And he glances with interest at Kumajirou, as he starts speaking again:

"Trepidation regarding the handshake suggests that you are nervous about making new acquaintances, possibly because you have low expectations of becoming close with others? In any case, you seem like a quiet, agreeable fellow. And your friend?"

"!"

Being so unused to people even noticing him, Canada is astonished to have someone so accurately peg his character. Out loud, no less. He blinks blankly at Sherlock's question for an instant then returns to smiling gently as he introduces the bear in his arms.

"Sorry, yes. This is Kumachino."

The bear looks directly at Sherlock and says softly, "Kumajirou."

Canada seems to take no notice and continues, "I'm afraid that we are seldom apart, but I hope he'll be of no trouble to you."

[ooc: And sorry, mun-mistake back here. Canada should always use a random, incorrect name for Kumajirou. u.u
Someone as detail-oriented as Holmes is bound to notice, so I figured I ought to mention it. ^^]

Holmes seems to notice Canada's surprise, and puts a hand through his hair. He's done it again, that bad habit of pointing things out that people doubtless don't want to hear. He'll have to be more careful about that-- but then again, he doesn't have Watson to vent about these things.

"Perhaps I was a bit too forward."

He mumbles it to himself, and then looks at Canada again, reaching towards the little bear and giving it an experimental prod.

"Kuma-jirou? An interesting name."

((OOC: no problem! He'll point it out soon enough, haha!))

Canada tilts his head at his mumble. Did he catch that right? "Mmm? Forward about what?"

Kumajirou just benignly takes the poke, looking curiously at Sherlock. If anything, he seems a bit pleased with the attention.

"It is an interesting name, isn't it? Not too sure what it means though." Canada sighs a bit at that. Maybe he should take Toboe's recommendation and call him simply 'Kuma'. But, it just didn't sit right somehow.

"Nothing, nothing."

Holmes shakes his head, and reaches for Kumajirou, leaning in and picking up one of his paws, inspecting it carefully.

"It sounds somewhat like a name that would be from the Orient, yes? However, I deign from your name that you are from...Canada?"

In return for having his paw inspected, Kumajirou sniffs at Sherlock's hand.

Canada tilts his head and smiles, curious about how that had been worded. "I am Canada," he specifies. "And as for Kumahitou, you're right! Japan once told me that 'kuma' means 'bear'. Not too sure about the other part though."

[And if you'd like to meet the brothers together, I invite you to please pop into the other thread on this log! (...Unless you don't mind what might happen if the door isn't answered XD)]

He's still a bit curious about Kumajirou, and Holmes proceeds to reach out and grab hold of Kumajirou's mouth, trying to inspect his teeth.

"Your name is Canada", Holmes 'corrects', while still looking quite intrigued by the little creature in front of him. "And I was under the impression that the bear's name was 'Kumajirou'?"

((OOC: haha, I'll see if I can find a spot to worm myself in!))

The bear gives a bit of a 'huff' in surprise when he goes for the teeth, but still lets Sherlock do as he wants for now. This is becoming an all-together unusual experience! He hopes that his breath doesn't smell like the fish he had for dinner...

"That's right?" he answers in reply to both comments. Canada is not too sure what Sherlock is getting at. Was there something the matter with his name, or Kumajirou's?

[ooc: You're a star ^.^]
