Something was horribly wrong.

For a moment, Gin didn't understand what he was seeing. His clock reflected a time at him that was... unusual. And wrong. He usually woke up a few hours earlier than what it was showing him right now for the simple fact that he could never sleep through the morning rituals of Ukitake. Oh the man was quiet enough and if he'd had a particularly exhausting night he could doze right on through it but he usually tended to wake up right as the tea pot whistled. Just a brief moment of wakefulness that he could easily disregard. Which was why when he saw his clock now, for the first time this morning, something in his brain groggily nagged at him that something wasn't right.

With a muted sigh into the pillow, Gin rolled over and grabbed his phone from the stand and hit a button, illuminating the surface. Nope, time was right. With a small groan, the angel sat up in bed and pushed the sheets down so that he could slide his legs out. As his feet hit the floor, he straightened and ambled right to the door, which slid open without complaint. There he figured out immediately what was wrong.

There was no lingering aroma of tea, no kettle out, no roommate with a dreadful smile on his lips wishing him a good morning. As he'd thought earlier, something was horribly wrong.

Feeling much more wakeful now due to his concern, Gin padded over in only a pair of drawstring sweats to Ukitake's room and quietly knocked. Maybe the other man had gone out?

"Ukitake, you in there?"

He slept like a rock, really - or at least, up to this point. Habits instilled by the Gotei still remained even after a year out; and the unusual sound of the light knock was enough to wake him up again.

...Or try to, anyway. The world felt like it was under an odd, chilly sort of film when he finally noticed it - and, as his mind tried to catch up with the strangeness of it, he found he couldn't quite decipher what the person on the other side of the door was saying.

"Ah...Sentaro...?"

It was muttered a bit blearily, and - oh, dear. What if it was Kiyone? That would probably jump-start an argument if nothing else did...ah, that was going to be troublesome...

With a sigh, he shifted - but only managed to roll over about halfway. The strange weakness pinned him down still, like an all-around weight...

Through the thinness of the door he heard shuffling and a barely audible murmur. Well that's one kind of answer. He thought idly as he ceased knocking and leaned against the wall, rubbing his eyes.

"Are you okay?" He inquired, smothering a yawn and resisting the urge to stretch for the moment. Now that he knew Ukitake wasn't dead, his concern seemed silly, even if the nagging voice persisted that something was wrong.

Okay? Okay...hm, how strange. Usually a fervent, overtly eager offering of tea came first...

Slightly more awake, he tiredly prodded beyond the door briefly for any defining reiatsu signature - possibly faintly felt on Gin's end as a barely palpable flutter of energy, like a tiny ocean wave struggling onto the coast - and, upon gathering...nothing at all, he sat up.

...Tried to. Failed the first time, attempted using his elbows for leverage the second time, and thus gained some more gound - his upper body refusing to cooperate all the while - but he did manage it, at length. And, when he did, the realization of the matter sank in.

Right. This was his room. On the Thor. The person on the other side of the door being...

The temporary moment of lucidity came and went - an attempt to climb out of bed ended up with him sinking back down onto the covers rather like a ragdoll. Fevers really did bring on the weakness, didn't they...? Ah, so troublesome.

"...Yes, I'm..." What had the latter said again? "...Ah, I'm...fine..."

The attempt at raising his voice to an audible level turned out to be a bad idea - it cracked slightly towards the end, and then he was coughing. Sizable, heavy coughs, these ones - and, upon starting, it took several seconds for the fit to cease.

The gentle probing of energy fell on an oblivious angel. It wasn't one of his forte's and something he hadn't even considered learning in his years on Earth. He heard more shuffling and then some words, slightly more audible than the last set and-

Shit. He should have known. Practically ordering Ukitake's door to open, Gin stepped inside and went straight to the man who was coughing in his bed. "Lie down and shut up." He ordered instantly, his cool hand coming up to smooth Ukitake's hair away from his face so that he could check his temperature.

"Should've figured you were sick." He muttered, more to himself than anything.

Notably, Ukitake was...well, burning up; though instead of looking flushed he just seemed even paler than usual.

That being said, he found himself a bit unsure as to what just happened, with the speed at which Gin was suddenly inside and by the bedside. Bemused, he noted the hand suddenly on his head, and raised an arm himself, taking that same hand by the wrist and moving it off gently but firmly.

If only so as to give Gin a fairly baffled look.

"...Ah, what?"

He glanced around, then - come to think of it...goodness, how long had he been out...?

"...What time is it?"

Frowning as his hand was pushed away, Gin leaned back and returned Ukitake's baffled look with an annoyed one. "12:37. I got... curious, when I realized you weren't awake yet and figured I'd see if you were in." He added, averting his eyes to a nearby wall instead as he spoke.

Now that he thought about it, maybe had overreacted.

Just a smidgen.

If Gin was worried about appearing overbearing, he had little to worry about - after all, it was a small thing by comparison to the antics of Kiyone and Sentaro.

In fact it was perhaps partly because of this, then, that Ukitake didn't really notice the hesitation in those words, or the unusualness of the actions Gin was performing at the moment. Instead, at the mention of the time, his eyebrows immediately rose - and he made an attempt at sitting up again abruptly, propping himself on an elbow.

"Ah - is it really? So late already? But--"

He had to cut off those words in favor of immediately pressing a palm of his mouth instead, however, as another coughing fit overtook him - this one heavier and damper than the last.

A vicious cycle appeared to be starting up - one that was probably better waylayed before it got much further...

"I thought I said lie down and shut up." Gin growled in exasperated tones as he reached forward and pressed two fingers against the man's neck, much like he had a few days ago. The source wasn't any easier to find today than it had been then but at least this time he could provide a little relief for the shinigami.

With a soft, barely audible murmur, the tips of his fingers began to glow slightly. That accomplished, he began to swiftly draw the character for "restore" on Ukitake's neck. It was clumsy and inefficient, like pouring a cup of water on a forest fire but without knowing the true cause of the coughing, it was all he was willing to do. Only an idiot would throw healing magic at someone without knowing what they were trying to fix.

...Well, that certainly hadn’t been expected. Swallowing down the leading end of the coughing fit in favor of forming a half-hearted, somewhat scatterbrained protest, the last thing he’d been expecting was - getting two fingers to the neck. Again...?

Sufficiently bemused but placated enough for the moment through sheer surprise, Ukitake sat still and blinked a couple of times - but then Gin started…well, drawing something over there…

"--What are you--"

The question forms but stops short, for a moment. Even in the only partial lucidity of a high fever, he could feel some effects of the restoration spell starting to kicking in - namely an odd, warm sort of feeling, not particularly expansive, but...

He took a breath - and found that he could already breathe just a little easier, and even steady his voice some.

He gave the latter a faintly surprised look, eyebrows upraised.

"...What are you doing...?"

Carefully releasing a breath he hadn't realized he was holding in, Gin withdrew his fingers and watched as the character faded away into nothing. Idly, he mused that it had been quite some time since he'd used magic on someone other than himself. A few months, at the very least.

Raising his head at Ukitake's inquiry, Gin straightened and ran his hand through his hair as he answered. "Getting you water." And with those curt, evasive words, he left the room to do just that.

Whether it was because of Ukitake's reaction or the inability to face the fact that he'd just crossed a line he'd sworn he never would, Gin simply didn't feel like dealing with that right now.

Ukitake watched as Gin vacated the room, feeling as if he'd just been sidelined somehow - though how, exactly, was still evading him at the moment. Ah, silly fever.

He flattened himself back down on the bed for a bit with a sigh as a small wave of weariness suddenly overtook him - sitting up for so long was a bit of effort in itself. But the moment of rest wasn't meant to be partiularly extensive, and soon Ukitake had pulled himself upright again, with some effort. Additional effort after that had him shifting into a sittng position, getting both legs over the edge of the bed, tabi touching the floor. After that he had to take another moment's pause - coughed a couple of times - and reached over to the bedside table for a tissue. He always liked to have a box there, on the odd chance the night decided to grant him with a fit or something similar...

He coughed into said tissue a couple more times - though these weren't half as bad as the last batch mere minutes ago. If anything, Ukitake was a bit surprised to find only a few small flecks of red in the kerchief - usually, on fever days like this, they tended more towards large blotches, didn't they...?

It must have been linked to whatever it was Gin had done. It certainly hadn't been kido, but...

He continued musing idly, half his energies devoted to the thought process while the other half contended with the rigor of staying upright, in this sitting position. Not to mention it still felt rather chilly in here...Ukitake was still shivering a bit, though he didn't really realize it.

In the kitchen, Gin opened one of the cupboards and pulled out a glass. Then, padding over to the sink, he turned one of the knobs on the faucet and held the glass beneath it as his mind wandered to what he had just done.

Honestly, it wasn't such a big deal, what he had just done. He shouldn't worry about it as much as he did. Plenty of people had seen him healing others and himself before. Hell, the number of people who knew he was an angel alone was probably nearing the 30 mark by now.

And yet, he worried nonetheless. Yes, he had healed others before, but... this? This was different. This was crossing the "I will never care about anyone on this ship" line. It was something he'd set for himself near the beginning, after hearing that people had tendencies of disappearing and reappearing without any previous memories of the place. He didn't need the kind of pain such things caused. He was sick of losing people he cared about.

But then again, hadn't he already toed past the line once? Like when he'd found out Aphrodite had toyed with Natalia and Asch?

"... this place is unhealthy." He muttered to himself and started when he realized the glass was overflowing. Sighing softly, he shut off the faucet and hunted for a towel to wipe the bottom of the glass. That done, he left it on the counter and returned to Ukitake's room.

Of course. Gin thought with a shake of his head. "Why do I even bother talking? My opinion is apparently not worth paying attention to." He muttered handing the glass to the shinigami before he seized an end of one of the sheets and tossed it over his head.

"I'm gonna make you some soup. Think you can be stationary for that long?"

Ukitake had enough time to hold onto the glass properly as it was handed to him, maybe, but the sheet...was something he hadn't expected.

With a small sound of surprise he caught the leading end of the blanket through sheer reflex, narrowly avoiding spilling the water at the same time.

"Is trying to sit up such a bad thing...?"

It could have been remarked a bit petulantly, but instead it came out rather absently. Still, Ukitake absentmindedly shifted around some, tugging the sheet over one shoulder and balancing the glass with his free hand. The room was rather cold, after all.

That done, he returned his attention to Gin - and smiled a bit.

"Maybe. I don't think I can get off the bed, actually - I'd probably fall right over. Don't trust my legs to cooperate right now..."

It was a bit of bland honesty - and Gin could very well have deduced as much himself, maybe.

Ukitake took a very small sip from the glass, which certainly helped clear his throat a bit more. He even felt confident speaking again without receding into a coughing fit, this time around. ...And so he did.

"Really, though, that - it isn't necessary. I've probably put you through plenty enough trouble already." Another smile, somewhat sheepish. "On days like this I usually don't end up eating much, anyhow. Wouldn't want you to just waste effort..."

Gin politely waited for Ukitake to finish speaking before he replied. "Since you ignore what I say, I'll just go ahead and ignore what you say. Karma's a bitch and all that." And, with a shrug, he made a show of placing his hands over his ears before marching right back out of the room.

Only when he was in the hallway did he let his hands drop. Seriously, the guy was a bit of a dork. Heading into the kitchen, Gin got some water boiling before he began to dig around for those canned soups he'd bought a while ago. What did you expect? Home made soups took hours to cook right. The good ones anyway. Coming up with one after a few minutes of searching, he opened it, tossed it in a pot and set it to boil while he went to go get properly dressed.

No point in cooking while shirtless, after all.

By the time he came back, this time in a pair of jeans and a basic t-shirt, both items were boiling. The water, obviously, went into a cup with some tea leaves selected at random while the soup went into a bowl.

Place those on a tray, add a spoon and a couple napkins... He was done. Now to make sure he didn't have to tie a certain shinigami to the bed...

"If you're not in bed, you've got ten seconds to be. I might be a frail fuck but I do know how to pin someone." ... in sex with a willing partner, but that doesn't need to be said, he added silently.

There is no lateness to speak of here >.> ocean_lightning October 23 2010, 19:08:41 UTC
Ukitake could only sweatdrop as Gin vacated the room. True, he supposed he probably deserved that one - but still...

Lamenting the latter's blatant ignorance of his request to not worry seemed a bit useless at this point, all the same. With a quiet sigh, Ukitake took another sip of water, gently placed the cup on the bedside table next to the box of tissues, and finally conceded to the weakness currently plaguing his limbs, sinking down on his back upon the pillow and studying the ceiling above absently. Gin's spell still seemed to be working, but the fatigue still lingered, as did a faint pain in the general chest area.

But that was all just par for the course.

He honestly hadn't intended to doze off - but Ukitake did anyway, in the short amount of time Gin took to ready the soup. So it was that Gin would not receive an answer for his warning...but would find Ukitake sleeping lightly in the bed when he returned, covers pulled up about halfway, looking possibly a bit paler than before.
