[Eying one of those bird mallets suspiciously.]
So'm I just supposed to grab it?
Reply
I guess... yeah.
[It occurs to her that you wouldn't think a bird would like to be used as a mallet, but the man said...]
Reply
Whelp, might as well try it. C'mere-
[and she lunges! She manages to grab it, but it's certainly putting up a good fight, and it's pretty difficult to hold on to. Not to mention all the feathers that are getting everywhere with this bird trying to get away.]
So... so I just swing- ow, hey, sit still!
Reply
I'll help!
[Reaching out, she tries to get ahold of its beating wings, only to get bopped by the bird's mallet-like head.]
Ow!
[The man had said something about directions... Her eyes darted to the box where the mome raths had been kept.]
Okay! Okay, hold on to him, I'll be right back!
Reply
[Doing her best to hold on to this ridiculous bird- is this supposed to be part of the game?]
Sure, just- hurry back!

[Polly skims over the directions as quickly as she can while the bird continues to struggle and bedevil poor Kaylee, only to find that the section about the mallet-birds only contains five words.]
[Polly reads them somewhat incredulously, but loudly enough for Kaylee to hear.]
Tickle it under its chin?
Reply
[Muttering streams of semi-intelligible Chinese phrases, Kaylee manages to, in fact, tickle the bird under its chin, at which point it freezes up and becomes more croquet-mallet-esque than it had been all evening.]
...Well, then.
Want to just switch off between this one instead of goin' through the trouble of taming another?

That... might be for the best.
[A lone, purple armadillo scampers by.]
You got the bird. I'll get the balls.
[Proceeds to scamper after it, calling a question over her shoulder.]
What color do you want?

[Those armadillos didn't look like too much trouble, but then again, she hadn't been expecting half the fight she got out of the bird.]

Wha--?
[After a brief struggle, Polly settles for allowing the thing to sit on her shoulder, tiny claws curled in her hair as it tries to chew on it. At least it frees up her hands to catch the little orange armadillo as it plays in the nearby stream.]
[Lips pursed, she carries the little creatures back to Kaylee and holds the orange one out to her, which blinks up at the other woman confusedly.]

So we gotta hit these cute little guys? Seems like it might... hurt 'em.
[...this was a very strange game.]
Reply
[She gives a small frown.]
Well... The man said they're specially bred for this game... So they should be okay. And I think it definitely won't hurt the bird. It's head's really hard.
[After all, she'd recently gotten first-hand knowledge of that.]
[Prying the animal out of her hair, she held it up in front of the green bird-thing. The two creatures seemed to regard one another for a moment, and then the armadillo promptly rolled itself into a ball.]

So... go on, let's see it.

[Setting her armadillo down a few feet from the first wicket, she borrows the mallet bird and gives it a swing. It's a decent hit, and would've gone through, had the wicket not sprung a few inches to the side.]
[Polly smiled. This must be where the challenge came in! She offered the mallet bird back.]
Your turn, I guess!
Reply
[Kaylee spent a second trying to anticipate where the wicket would go, then decided to hell with it and hit the armadillo in its direction. The wicket wasn't particularly keen on letting her get the armadillo in, either.]
They're really tricky, aren't they?
