Bruce had been trolling around the library, getting back into the swing of things easily despite all that had happened in the past month. All things considered, he had experienced weirder, and that was no excuse to fall behind on his research.

He reached the end of one shelf and turned round the corner to look at the other side only to bump into a pile of books near one of the chairs, knocking them over. He bent down to grab the book and glanced at the covers. Interesting subjects- he wondered what she was planning.

"Doing some light reading?" he asked casually, holding the book he had picked up towards the girl.

Azula took it with a light "thank you"; she was clearly more interested in the book than she was in the person standing in front of her.

Then again...

"I am. I'm interested in how this ship and others like it are run, as a matter of fact. I don't suppose you'd know anything about that...?"

Had she run into the right person. He had designed and funded two separate space ships for the League in his day. Not that he was going to flaunt that information, of course.

"This one specifically? You're not going to find much. The crew are incredibly secretive. We can't even get a proper look at the engine."

Azula drummed her fingers on the cover of the book she was currently focusing on, a detailed history of human space travel. "That's not a surprise," she said dryly. "In that case, people are more likely to be helpful than books."

He stole a glimpse at the book cover. "Familiar with space travel already?"

"I didn't used to be," she said. "But I'm learning more now."

"Any reason you're interested?"

He could see why she would be. If he didn't know anything about space travel, he'd want to learn all he could once he found himself trapped on a space ship. Hell, he knew a lot more about space than some people in NASA and he still came here to look some things up.

"A few," she said nonchalantly, mentally sizing the other man up. She had plenty of reasons, and she wouldn't be averse to sharing them-- but only with the right people.

"Who are you?"

He almost smiled. Healthy paranoia was a good trait.

"Bruce Wayne. Pleasure to meet you."

He held out his hand for a shake.

Her handshake was hard and confident. "I'm Princess Azula, daughter of Fire Lord Ozai and soldier to the Fire Nation. Tell me, do you believe that your world has been destroyed?"

No reason not to cut right to the chase, after all.

Despite his age, his was also strong. "Can't say I've heard of it."

"I've never been one to trust what people tell me, though I can say there was a... precedent. It's possible. Not likely."

One corner of Azula's mouth twitched upward approvingly. He'd passed her little test.

"No, not likely at all. There's a reason I'm interested in learning about the operation of spaceship, after all."

He abandoned his small talk and looked at her seriously.

"You'll have to figure out where we are first. The ship's course has proven difficult to predict and no one I've spoken to knows where we are. And I've spoken to people who have made it their business to know." He wasn't trying to dissuade her- in fact, he encouraged said healthy paranoia- just inform her of the facts.

"So I've heard. I've already spoken to one person who's interested in finding a map, as a matter of fact."

"I'm sure you've found that there are many people who also doubt that our planets had been destroyed. Obviously it's very relevant to everyone, so it's important to find out what you can."

"Hmmm, really? Most of the people I've talked to do believe that. When I made it clear that I wouldn't without any evidence or proof, I was insulted more than once. One rude boy called me stupid and delusional outright." This, of course, had all been after she had made a blanket statement calling the entire ship gullible. Azula still didn't see what was so wrong with that, though-- after all, in many cases, it was completely true.
