Hawkeye tended to always try to shower when the apartment was empty--a habit leftover and reclaimed from her academy days, when it was truly important. She had left early the previous morning, had her encounter with Kimblee, spent the day looking up information, spent the rest of the night pulling records at the hospital and lying herself out of trouble, and gone straight to her afternoon job from there. Her shower felt rather deserved.
She took a bit longer than she typically did, letting the hot water work her tense muscles into something resembling a relaxed state. The heat against the scars on her throat and shoulder made her wince--the absence of sensation across the scars of her back was now an old companion, familiar and dismissed.
It always seemed to be in situations like this, when she was warm and relaxed and ready to crawl into her bed and forget existence for a precious few hours, that her thoughts turned down soured, bloody roads and all the water in the world couldn't wash the sand from her skin.
