We're Still Standing

Note to my non-San Diego friends: fishnetfatale, evil_marcus and myself are not in the path of any of the various fires blazing around town. They're either in the far north/northeast or south/southeast parts of the county.

If I may speak for the others for a moment, I think all three of us realize how fortunate we are that our home, in the heart of San Diego, is surrounded by all sorts of concrete and stucco. Any of the fires would have to cross a lot of freeway to reach us, and if things come to that, we're all probably better off looking for hotel rooms in Tijuana, anyway.

We also realize that there's a lot of people we know hurting: we took in a castmate last night, from one of the first neighborhoods evacuated, and I don't think he finally got to sleep 'til 4 or 5 a.m. Yesterday morning I read that predicatedefect lost her home. Another friend, now living in Omaha, is proceeding on the assumption that while his mom is safe, her house is probably another casualty. I've spent most of the past couple of days checking in with other friends around the county. Here at work, Three co-workers have been evacuated, including our general manager, and my boss is just waiting for the word before he leaves his home.

In following the coverage today, it seems the weather is finally starting to cooperate, and that the people fighting this damn mess are getting more assets to help them. A few evac'ed residents are being allowed to return to their homes for a limited time. If things break the right way, the worst may be over by Thursday morning, just in time for my annual Wichita trip.

In other news, perhaps small, but not ... unnotable to longtime readers, I contacted my mom's office today to check up on her. Go fig, she and my stepdad are on their annual Vegas vacation.

Keep a good thought, True Believers
