:: PERSONALITY ::
Ganju is loud, quick tempered, boisterous, and carries around a list of self-declared titles like a flag of proclamation. If there’s a fight to be had, he’s usually the one who caused it or is egging it on from the sidelines if it’s out of his league. Ganju is proud and full of bravado with just enough skill and genuine courage to back it up that he isn't entirely blowing hot air.

While not an outright cheat, he’s a practical enough fighter he just barely skirts the edges of being accused of it. He won’t stab an opponent in the back but is more than willing to run, dodge, distract, and fight quick and dirty. He won’t let go of a brawl or grudge he started himself and can be surprisingly clever and strategic in his fights and knows when to keep his head down when the odds are overwhelming. That pragmatic surrender only goes so far, however, if his pride as a man or the welfare of a friend are at stake.

Ganju is willing to both fight for his friends and with them if he thinks that’s what it’ll take to help. He can be pushy and overbearing when it comes to looking after people or showing affection. Ganju can act with good intentions and at least has a rough sort of charisma to make up for it and under the right conditions he can be leader or even a rough sort of teacher. In some ways, he’s just an overgrown kid eager to show off for his older siblings and prove he can keep up with them, all while trying to become his own man at the same time.

:: BACKGROUND ::
Ganju’s hatred of the shinigami rose from the memory of his brother’s corpse. His brother Kaien Shiba was the oldest of the three siblings and the one who chose to attend Soul Academy and become a shinigami. Kaien was a prodigy and finished the traditional six years of school in only two and became a Vice-Captain shortly after, even sought after by Captain Ukitake of the Thirteenth Division. He was beloved not only by his own division, but even managed to earn the distant respect of those whose idealogy he clashed against.

All of that came to an end one dark night when Kaien’s wife Miyako Shiba (and Third Seat of his division) was brutally killed by a Hollow. Kaien sought revenge and was accompanied only by his captain and an unseated officer, Rukia Kuchiki. Kaien engaged the Hollow in combat and continued to fight barehanded even after it devoured his zanpakuto. Captain Ukitake kept Rukia from assisting her mentor, saying it was a matter of Kaien’s pride that he fight and take down the monster that killed his wife. Kaien lost, however, when the Hollow invaded his body and took control, nearly taking the lives of his captain and protege as well. Captain Ukitake succumbed to illness and was unable to fight and it was Rukia who drove her zanpakuto through Kaien to both kill him and free him from the Hollow’s control. Kaien tried to console her and told her that his heart was left with her. Rukia continued to carry the guilt of that deed, necessary or not, for decades after.

Ganju, however, carried a very different memory of that night. He knew only a strange shinigami whose face he never forgot dragging along a body and his brother thanking that very same shinigami with his last breath. Throat slashed and stab wound through his chest, but Ganju and his older sister Kukaku were told it was a Hollow’s deed and little else of the events surrounding Kaien’s death. Ganju grew up with a sharp hatred of all shinigami to the point of actively trying to drive them away from his home district and immediate hostility to any who came there. He even went so far as to declare himself the number one shinigami hater of Rukongai. For all of Ganju’s open hatred, however, he still held the memory of his brother in high respect despite the open contradiction of abhorring what his brother had chosen to become. Ganju became a loud and boisterous youth who lead a gang who rode boars and adding one self-proclaimed title after another to his name.

An encounter with substitute shinigami Ichigo Kurosaki sparked a curiosity that lead Ganju to joining a rescue mission right into the heart of what he called enemy territory. Ganju at first thought Ichigo was simply another shinigami to drive away and started a rough brawl of a fight that was ended only by his evening curfew and threat of punishment from his sister. They met again when Ichigo and his friends, lead by Yoruichi Shihoin, came to the Shiba home for help in entering Seireitei. Ganju discovered that Ichigo was unlike any of the shinigami had met before and that the substitute shinigami was willing to risk his own life to repay Rukia for giving him her powers to save his family. Ganju helped Ichigo master the technique necessary to power Kukaku's cannon that would launch the rescue group into Seireitei. He told them later of his brother's death and that he was willing to join them and venture into 'enemy territory' to discover more about the shinigami.

Kukaku's cannon was successful and while they were separated, Ichigo and his friends did enter the protective forcefield that surrounded Seireitei. Ganju and Ichigo encountered members of the Eleventh Division, the Court Guard's top combat unit, and engaged in combat. Ganju's battle consisted mainly of eluding his pursuer Yumichikia and enduring several direct hits when that wasn't possible, but in the end Ganju was successful in escaping after throwing a string of fireworks in Yumichika's face. He met back up with Ichigo and the two were cornered from all sides by members of the Eleventh Division. A scrawny shinigami stumbled at their feet and Ganju and Ichigo attempted to use him as a hostage, only to find the Eleventh Division hated those of the hostage's division, the Fourth Division and medical unit. One of their allies unknowingly provided a distraction scattering the Eleventh and Ganju and Ichigo flee with their hostage in tow.

The hostage, Hanatarou Yamada, proved surprisingly useful after learning of Ichigo's connection to Rukia and lead them through the undergound tunnels of Seireitei towards the tower where she was being held. The trio got as close as they can but encountered Vice Captain Renji Abarai of the Sixth Division before they could proceed further. Ichigo and Renji engaged in a vicious battle while Ganju and Hanatarou watched from the sidelines. Ichigo was victorious, but only after sustaining deadly injuries and the three of them were forced to flee underground once again. Hanatarou treated Ichigo's wounds and later Ganju's, fulfilling his promise of healing Ichigo in just one night. They encountered another obstacle before they could get any closer to saving Rukia with the approach of Captain Zaraki Kenpachi of the Eleventh Division. Ichigo told Ganju and Hanatarou to run ahead and free Rukia while he stayed behind and battled Kenpachi. Ganju had to carry Hanatarou away, but they managed to escape.

Ganju and Hanatarou made it to Rukia's prison after knocking out the guards and Hanatarou opened the door with a key he had stolen earlier. When it opened, Ganju finally saw the face of the woman they were risking their lives to save and the very same shinigami that had killed his brother. It was only the panicked protest of Hanatarou and the interruption of Captain Byakuya Kuchiki of the Sixth Division that stopped Ganju from attacking her. Ganju was ready to beg for their lives until Hanatarou asked him to take Rukia and go, even if he understood why Ganju wouldn't want to save her. Ganju watched Hanatarou march out on that bridge trembling and without his zanpakuto but still moving forward where Ganju was ready for surrender. Pride and honor wouldn't let him leave a friend to fight in his stead and Ganju sent Hanatarou back and took his place. He kept standing after an initial attack so fast he couldn't even see it, telling Byakuya that a man of the Shiba clan wouldn't go down so easily. It was at the mention of that family name that Byakuyadisplayed the first release of his zanpakuto's power, a deadly attack of tiny blades that scattered on the air like sakura petals. Ganju managed to survive and later rejoined Ichigo's other friends in their search for him during the final battle.

After it was over, Rukia appeared to Ganju and Kukaku to make a formal apology for her role in Kaien's death. Ganju was quick to point out that Rukia was the shinigami they were sent to rescue until silenced by his sister Kukaku. Kukaku told Rukia they had been told of the true nature of Kaien's death by his captain and that she had long ago made up her mind to forgive Rukia should she ever come to apologize. The Shiba family hosted a dinner sending off Ichigo and his friends before they returned to the living world.

Ganju later met both Ichigo and his friends and his own friend Hanatarou in the living world during the rise of a new enemy, the Bounts. Ganju was sent by his sister when she sensed a strange spiritual presence in Ichigo's hometown of Karakura Town. Ganju was aided by Hanatarou when he first arrived and even found a job at the same convenience store where Hanatarou worked. The two sensed a battle going on nearby and came to the rescue of Ichigo and his friends in one of their first fights against the Bounts. Later, Ganju literally kicked Ichigo out of a dark funk with the aid of Renji. The Bounts moved the battle to Soul Society and Ichigo and friends followed. There, Ganju was still able to offer some aid in the form of his connections in Rukongai.

:: ABILITIES ::
»Endurance - Ganju’s thick skull and ability to take a beating was commented on by several opponents, including Ichigo and Yumichikia, a member of the battle happy Eleventh Division. He was able to keep up and running after several injuries inflicted by Yumichika and able to survive a captain’s direct attack. Even at home, he’s able to survive getting kicked and slapped around by his older sister and a full grown boar he’s fond of riding.

»Fighting Skills - He tends towards a loose brawling style with hard punches and kicks that probably won’t take too long to remember given his loud mouth and tendency to get in fights. He also has at least a basic proficiency in swordfighting that wouldn’t take long to pick up again, as well as potential to improve if he could find proper training and take it seriously.

»Spiritual Sense - Most shinigami and some strong souls in Soul Society and the living world appear to have the ability to sense other souls and Hollows. The stronger this sense, the easier it is to find those actively trying to hide themselves. In canon, Ganju appears somewhere in the middle of this scale. He was able to sense Ichigo and the others fighting the Bounts from a distance of a least a few city blocks and later sense Ichigo’s deep depression from a similar distance. Ganju would average out to being able to sense spirits and his friends as long as they weren’t actively trying to hide their presence.

LOCKED

»Kido, Seppa/Renkan Seppa Shin - Kido is Soul Society’s version of spells. Up to ninty-nine of them are known and recognized by Seireitei, but informal/proprietary versions do exist outside of it. Seppa is Ganju’s, an earth-based kido that can turn a given area into sand. This ranges in size from a hole about a foot across to holes in walls four to five feet across and several inches deep to near craters filled with sand in the ground itself. It requires a spiral gesture made with either hand or foot and a spoken gesture for larger area affect. Rankan Seppa Shin is essentially several small castings linked together to affect a very large area. This would have to be unlocked by a specific memory of using it, as well as trial and error to fine tune it again.

»Kido, General - He’s never shown using any other form of kido, but is certainly at the strength level to learn it. This would be dependent on any CR he forms with castmates or others with equivalent skills and any training he might receive from them.

»Fireworks - Fireworks and small explosives are a Shiba family specialty and something Ganju has a talent for using in combat. Specific knowledge of how to make them would have to be remembered or relearned, but he’d have a strong affinity for it should the opportunity arise.

»Fastest Cashier in Karakura Town - No, seriously, he adds that on to his list of titles. Toned down to something along the lines of a real knack for registers and entry level cashier work if put in front of one and told the basics.
