On symbology... err symbolism...

I got my Scand 150 paper back today, minus ten for a "shallow" interpretation... maybe if he actually read the paper, then he'd find the symbology he was looking for. Stupid professor.

EDIT: My statement above is grammatically correct. It was in fact a deliberate attempt to coax somebody into attacking my grammar. Let me explain:

Tonight I was watching Alias, and Jennifer Garner used the word symbology in describing some graphical markings. The word stood out like a deer in headlights. I waited to no avail for Willem Dafoe to jump out and correct her with the word she was looking for: ssssymbolism.

It made me wonder, is symbology an actual word? I mean it must be considering brilliant agent Sydney Bristow used it, yet both Microsoft Word and LJ returned it as a spelling error. I proceeded to look it up in numerous dictionaries, and each had an adequate definition:

sym.bol.o.gy (n)
1. The study or interpretation of symbols or symbolism.
2. The use of symbols.

Other than the not so common, but very catchy vulgarities I have picked up (fuck, ass?), has The Boondock Saints altered my mental dictionary? Or is symbology just an awkward word in the English language?

PS: This is how I keep busy these days... sad, huh?
PPS: I didn't get a bad grade on my Scand 150 paper... I in fact got a perfect score.
