Writer's Block: Sheldon and Penny 4ever!

Who is Penny and Sheldon?

Its a difficult topic. Some fanfiction can be really good at times. I still have several pieces written about Garak from DS9 on my hard drive because they are just so good. I have also been known to read Harry Potter ones on occasion.

Writing fanfiction is something I did possibly twice. I once wrote a piece about Snape which went down well with he fans and when I was much younger I used to write for an online RPG about startrek (I played a cardassian of course) that was excellent fun while it lasted although probably not really fanfiction.

I think that it inspires a lot of new writers. It is easier to approach fanfiction as a writer than creating your own characters and world because the foundations are already established. You know the people. You know the place. You don't have to 'waste' your time establishing who you are writing for because your audience already knows. Its like writing a second book, you can jump in without touching too deeply on who you are writing about. You just start typing because you know. I think this is both encouraging and also dangerous as you never learn to create your own backgrounds if you only write fanfiction.

The very last piece I read was a couple of years ago and it involved Snape from Harry Potter becoming pregnant. Then another one appeared. Then another.... and I literally threw in the towel. When it gets to the point that an individual wants to write about a male, well loved character becoming pregnant it makes me wonder what is missing in the writer's life. When you start to wonder more about what on earth is going through the author's head than actually enjoying the story... then it's seriously time to stop reading.

I don't tend to read fanfiction anymore. Too many books out there being published every year to dive into
